Pre-race routine:

Rode by bike down from 161 to CPW at 6:15. It was 28F and winds 10-20 mph. on the day. Found race site and racked bike, went to bathroom (heated!) and numbered bike and bib. I said hi to Andy and Will from GC Tri, chatted with folks in transition.
Event warmup:

Did some strides prior to race.
Run

Comments:

I'm really not sure why I was so slow. I was planning to run 8's in the first leg and 8:30's in the second leg. I felt good coming into race and ran 7:30's for a 5 miler in February when I was 5lb heavier. My Garmin showed me running 2.4 miles on each leg at a pace of 7:45 for first leg and 7:55 for second leg. I certainly did not feel like I was running 9's on either leg, but the race clock doesn't lie.

Overall R1 164/384
Overall R2 128/384
What would you do differently?:

I positioned myself badly at back of pack starting out, this probably slowed me a bit. However I'm not concerned, this was a race for fun and practice in transition.
Transition 1
  • 01m
Comments:

In and out pretty quick, happy enough on both transitions.
What would you do differently?:

After a few races I would expect the bike to run to be down to 30 seconds.

Comments:

Having passed a good number of people on the run I settled into rhythm on bike quickly and felt good. I passed a lot of folks based on my initial positioning and settled in around a group doing same pace as me. CPW is tricky in spots and you need to keep your wits about you on some down hills and corners. Plenty of rollers on the East side to keep the legs mashing, but I paced myself spinning up the hills and hit the hammer on the down hills.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, my first time racing on bike in the park, really enjoyed it, despite the cold.
Post race
Warm down:

Changed into dry clothes, snacked on some Cliff Bloks, said hi to Andy and Will.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Hard to say. Run came in well below my expectations. Had a long week of run specific training so possibly some fatigue played a part.

Event comments:

I enjoyed the race and would do it again. Transition is very tight and tricky to negotiate, but a run and bike in CP can't be beat.
