BTW, my brother and I did this race last year...and yes, we're crazy enough to do it again.

LOVED this race. I did it in 2010 and it was my first 140.6. Crazy hilly bike course and not so shady run but that's what I loved about it. It was one tough mutha! Any 140.6 after this will be a breeze. If I weren't doing IMFL this year, I'd do GFT again for sure. If you live close enough, the same company that puts on this race has a cycling event called Assault on Sugarloaf about 4-6 weeks prior to the 140.6 race and it is usually the actual 112 bike course so you can get a feel for it. I found this to be extremely beneficial. Best of luck with your training.

Patrick,

Yes hills! Plenty of them.  You wouldn't believe your eyes when you see some of them. You don't think you are in Florida that's for sure. It is about 3600 feet of climbing and those rolling hills beat the crap out of your legs.  You have to really play it smart on the 112 miles if you want to survive 26.2 miles after without having to crawl in.

Indeed, hills....and not just from a Floridian's perspective.  Rode last year's race on a road bike with aerobar extensions - not bad for climbing.  Using a tri-bike this year; we'll see how it goes!

I'm looking forward to reading about your comparison.  This race is on my short list!  :-)

It's on my short list too...meaning my list is really short since I only do one race per year in an effort to balance family, work, church, training, etc.  I am starting the hill training again next week on the tri-bike (did all of my training on the road bike last year)...I will do my best to share the comparison between the two.

I have B2B this year as my first IM distance.  I am hoping to do Vineman next year.  I am thinking maybe Great Floridan after that.  Of course if Vineman doesn't work out, that would move it up on the list :-)

Lord willing, B2B is on my list for next year, followed by IM Florida in 2013.

I think my brother hacked my account and changed my font settings to a clear font. Either that, or severe user error. Either way, if it wasn't so funny, I'd probably be mad.

Because I have received a few emails and phone calls about where to stay in Clermont, FL, here is a link on the www.greatfloridian.com website that has info for our two partner hotels. We like these two properties based on positive feedback from triathletes that have stayed there in the past. One of the really nice "triathlete friendly" things that both locations due is provide old towels to hand out (when you ask for them) so that you can use them to wipe off your bikes, in your room. As you may already know, many hotels/motels etc, prohibit bikes in their rooms. These two properties have no problem with you sharing your room with your bike.

Though the GFT is a few months away, but what other questions do you have?

Mark

Mark,

Thanks for the info...I'm sure there will be more questions as we approach October.  Feel free to keep us up to date.  Looking forward to another great race experience.

Mark,

Any news or updates on the bike and run courses for this year?

Thanks!

As of right now, May 28th, we are using the 2010 bike and run courses. Though the run course is not our traditional 3 laps around Lake Minneola, we had very positive feedback in regards from triathletes about how the run course was much more family and friends friendly. One of the ideas we are working on is to returning the finish line to Waterfront Park. The new pavilion and other upgrades to the park that the City of Clermont have completed really add to the park and make for a wonderful venue once again.

BTW, entry fees for the Florida Challenge Tri on June 12th and the Great Floridian Tri on October 22nd go up June 1st, so if you are even thinking about maybe doing either of these events, head on over to www.TriFlorida.com and register today.

Florida Challenge:
Long Course: 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13.1 mile run
Olympic/International Course: 1.5k swim, 40k bike, 10k run

Great Floridian Triathlon:
Ultra Distance, Are YOU Tough Enough?: 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run
Intermediate Course: 2k swim, 62k bike, 15k run
Super Sprint (just announced): 440 yard swim, 8 mile bike, 2 mile run

Thanks Mark...loved the layout of both the bike and run courses last year.  And agreed, the run course was great for seeing family and friends, which became very valuable around mile 18.
