Total Time = 5h 36m 6s
Overall Rank = 31/421
Age Group = MML**
Age Group Rank = 31/421
Pre-race routine:

Tapered for a full 2 weeks prior to this race event. A few light runs throughout those 2 weeks.
Event warmup:

Ran an easy 4 mile run the morning prior to the race. Hydrated for 48 hours prior.
Run
  • 5h 36m 6s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 12m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

Weather was clear, and temperature was comfortable, but winds were very difficult. Strong winds out of the west averaged consistently between 25 and 30 mph throughout the entire race with reported gusts up to 50 mph. As luck would have it, this would be almost a direct headwind for the entire uphill climb on the course.
What would you do differently?:

I would run more endurance climbs on hills, but it is tough to find hills of that length and grade in Ohio. The altitude of the run was a challenge, but until I am wealthy enough to afford a training center in Colorado, I may just have to deal with this as is.
Post race
Warm down:

walking and more walking...

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of adaptation to the altitude as well as the consistently strong winds.

Event comments:

** MML = Military Male Light Category. There were no age groups for this race. All competitors in the military categories competed in utility uniforms and combat boots. the light category carried only a canteen or camelbak, while the heavy category carried 35 lb rucksacks. The distance was a full 26.2 marathon.

Nice job at a tough race!! I had several friends out there and plan to go next year! Pretty solid pacing, and sounds like some rough conditions (par for that course it seems!).  Congrats, great race and great pictures!

Great job! Solid time, especially for doing it in uniform and the lack of altitude/hills training. Congrats!I did it in 2009. Didn't want to suffer in uniform, so I went "easy" in the civilian category.

Thanks Haley and Brittany. It was a pretty tough race, but one that was definitely worth doing. My primary goal was to participate and use the March as incentive to stay motivated with my training through the long, cold winter months here in Ohio. I was happy with my time, but would have liked to have been a little faster. At the same time, I was battling a mental wall that was a combination of getting behind pace due to the wind and not wanting to go too crazy in uniform and boots and risk an injury that would sideline me at the beginning of the season.

While it isn't a "traditional" marathon, it is one that I would encourage folks to check out as something different to try.

Will Team RWB have a presence at The Flying Pig?

Yes yes! In fact it's one of the Team RWB officially listed events meaning they'll have some sort of get together at it too!

What boots did you use for Bataan and do you recommend them?? I'm hunting for what I'd like to use for next year for it!

Quite sure that Bataan is a great early season strength builder!

You are a rock star. Awesome job, I can't imagine battling winds and altitude like that. This will make resiliency run a walk in the park. Great job hot stuff!

I chose the Belleville Kiowa and I would highly recommend them. Probably as close to a running shoe as you can get in a military boot. Between these boots, two pairs of good socks and some KT tape, I survived with only a few hotspots...

Here is a link to a review, I found a good price on Amazon...
