Oh, and my ex-Navy Seal friend (Seal Team 2) often swims by himself in the mighty Mississippi here in Mn...upriver for a mile or two then back down, in a wetsuit and with a mask and fins, but even he never swims with a gun!

used to do it all the time when I lived in florida...could get pretty creapy sometimes when stingrays got too close. I really don't like swimming in the pool and all my races are open water so that was the best place to train. if you can't train in open water, how can you race there?

I agree that despite the constant calls for 'group' swimming, the odds of a rescue during training are so low in a lot of cases that you might as well be alone. In all the group swims I've done (many) in the ocean, there are too many disparities in pace such that outside of a periodic regroup every 15 mins or so (usually longer), you're basically on your own.

That said, I still prefer going with a group, but I'm sure the reality is that in a true emergency, unless I can shout pretty loudly, it's all me.

If you have to ask whether you should or shouldn’t…you probably shouldn’t.

What do you suggest can be done to make a group OWS safer.
