Age Group Rank = 10/17
Pre-race routine:

Normal stuff. Had yogurt and a banana some time before the race, took a 5 hr energy about 30 minutes prior to swim start. Met up with Steve and set up transition, hung out and met other athletes. Got into the water about 10 minutes before start and got a good warm-up in.
Event warmup:

Swim warm up 10 minutes prior
Swim
  • 43m 47s
  • 2000 meters
  • 02m 11s / 100 meters
Comments:

It looks like I am pulling right all the time, so I need to adjust my angles and keep aiming left. That and keep my stroke smooth and consistent. Time-wise I am ok with the results. Would like to shave off about 5-6 minutes for this distance in the long run.
What would you do differently?:

Sight better, stay more on course.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Run
  • 30m 49s
  • 4 miles
  • 07m 42s  min/mile
What would you do differently?:

Not sure I have anything specific in mind to improve this. Just not have calf cramps!
Post race
Warm down:

Hung out, ate a few cookies, had some gatorade and water, then saddled up with a few people for a 28 mile bike ride.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Sighting on the swim, calf cramps on the run.

Rough start - many bodies, feet and arms flailing about. Odd, as the race was not crowded. Sighting was horrible this race, I kept drifting right, either further into the lake, or up against the wall. Overall, stroke was ok - need to continue focusing on being long in the water, minimizing my number of strokes.

Calves were a bit cramped throughout. Worked them out for the most part, but think that without that aggravation I could have gone faster.
Course: A little uphill and downhill. Not bad.
