MonkeyClaw - 2011-04-07 4:07 PM I'll be doing the sprint and the Oly.

C'mon Tim, man up and do the Half with us instead.  You dominated Marquee - there is no reason you cannot do the longer distance.

I should be there for the sprint as well in July.

Man, always trying to get me to go longer! I haven't officially signed up yet, but I'm betting the Oly is in my future. Let's see how Rio Salado goes...

I'll probably be camping out or driving up from Sedona.

For those planning to camp out, I recall seeing a number of camp sites at the top of the hill toward Marshall Lake.  That is the hill we run on the course, and where the turnaround is set up is along the forest service road amidst the camp sites.

It would seem a pretty convenient place to camp out - although I do not know if there is a space cost, etc.

covenient except for the part about having to walk/ride up that hill with all your gear after the race...

I swam in Lake Mary last week, it was chilly but a bit nicer than the Phx area lakes. While I was there, I met 3 triathletes training for Mountain man and it made me wish I could do it this year.
The last time I swam in Lake Mary was 2008 and it was the scene of my one and only OWS freak out. I needed to go back there and prove I could actually swim in it

Lakeview is about 2 miles east of the start.  tats where we always stayed.  Site fees are $18 per night quite time from 10-6.  Nice place to stay, first come first serve tough so you will need to get there early friday afternoon to get good spots at all three campsites

Oh c'mon Sally - I have a hard time believing you have EVER freaked out during a tri!  But if so, you definitely exorcised that experience!

Ok, My family camping trip has changed because Big Lake is going to remain closed due to the Wallow Fire. We are going up to Lake Mary and hoping to find a camp site on a first come basis. I had no idea that Mountain Man was held at Lake Mary!!! Very cool!!!! I will be signing up for the sprint!

jriodique - 2011-06-24 1:28 AM is anyone wearing wetsuits for this race? i am!

Undecided here - the sprint swim is only 750m, so have to balance the time saved not having to strip it off in T1 versus the buoyancy benefit and speed on top of the water.

Lake temp should not be a factor - I hear it is going to be 70-74 water temp, so a wetsuit should not affect the body-warmth factor.

Whatever your decision, always make sure it is yours alone, and not based solely on what others are doing.....RYOR - Run Your Own Race (just because Lewis Eliot, Cam, the Gage's, et al do not wear wetsuits, do not let that be your reason for not wearing one.  Weigh your options based on your own performance factors.

thanks for the advice 101abp41 - are you doing the JCC Firecracker sprint tri next weekend too?

i'm still fairly new to sprint tris and this would be my 2nd ows race (1st ows race was in mission bay in san diego w/ a wetsuit)...so i figure i would wear one to help with the added buoyancy and speed effect.

Anybody swimming up there the day before the race?

I will be wearing my full wetsuit. I read on the Mountain Man page that the water temps can be 50-60 degrees in the summer. They recommend you bring one.

I will be there july 1st - july 18th camping somewhere. Might have to move a couple of times. If anyone is intrested in meeting up and doing swims, runs and bike send me a PM. I will give you my cell number. I am ready for the Olympic at Bartlett in Oct. so the July 17th sprint should be fun to do. Wondering what the course looks like?

I was up there last weekend to test the course out and while I am new, in my opinion the water was quite chilly. I will definitely be wearing my wetsuit.

When I looked at the mountain man website it said " Average lake temperature for the last 8 years has been exactly 71° F", and the email I received when I signed up said the temperature should be 72.  Where did you see temperature's in the 50's-60's?

I don't own a wetsuit and haven't planned on using one.

"Dear Triathlete,

Thank you for choosing the Mountain Man Sprint Triathlons, 27th Annual on Sunday 7/17. This is your entry confirmation. We are glad that you have selected this event and preparations are continually underway to make this year’s race bigger and better than ever.  Mountain Man Events has been producing memorable triathlons since 1984 and we want to thank you for your trust and patronage.  We expect the air temperature to be warm, so please bring plenty of extra fluids with you.  Our Flagstaff City reservoir Upper Lake Mary, is now almost FULL and we expect water temperature  to be 71/72° and wetsuits will be allowed. You can practice all three disciplines on the course at any time. "

Same as last year.

I am looking for it. But, I am looking at the website and it does say for the last 8 years the water temps have been 71 degrees. Maybe I saw it on Active.com I will check it again so I got my facts right.

Ok, I don't now? I am bad because I can't find where I saw those temps...hmmmmm Maybe I was looking at another race?? Maybe Vineman since it's in July because I am doing that in 2012. Sorry for the confusion. If I find it I will post it.

I''ll probably bring my sleeveless wetsuit and try and hit the lake on Saturday. If it's warm enough, I'll go without.

Last year, the water was a little colder as it had been raining pretty consistent up until the night before the race. The lake and the drive in was all fogged over.
