NAME: BamaDC / Mark
STORY:
In 2005 my wife (Amanda) wanted to run a Marathon.  And said, “you should do it to.”  So I started training in July of 05 and ran my first marathon in Feb. 06, the Ocala Marathon (4:15:30).

My quick increase in running volume lead to some overuse injuries.  This caused me to start attending spinning classes.  The teachers were all cyclist and they took my under their wings and I started cycling.  And I swam competitively until the 9th grade, so what the heck… I’ll do a triathlon.  I did a few races in 06, nothing that special… well that’s another topic.  I didn’t race any tris in 07, because we had our first child and it was my last year of Professional School.

So in 08 I went all out.  I finished Ironman Louisville in 14:19 and improved my half marathon time by 8 min.  1:50 in Feb 08 to a 1:42 in Nov 08.

2009 was year two.  I finished my second Ironman Louisville in 11:36, first Half Ironman in 5:26, dropped my half marathon time to 1:32 and had my first triathlon top ten overall.

2010 was year three.  I had a PR at the HIM distance 5:02 and had a couple of top ten overalls.  I took it easy this year and spent more time with the family.

FAMILY STATUS: Married to a fellow Triathlete and going on 7 years.  I have three sons Thomas 4yo, William  2yo and Matthew 6 months old.

CURRENT TRAINING:  I’m just having fun and training hard.  I took off the second half of last year.  So, I’ve got more mojo than ever this year.

2011 RACES:  Buster Britton Tri, Heel Crank Duathlon, Wet Dog Tri, Hiiway Sprint  Tri, RocketMan Oly,  AtomicMan HIM and as many 5Ks and 10Ks as possible. And possibly a winter Marathon.

WEIGHTLOSS:  I'm currently at 168 pounds and will be below 160 pounds by my August Oly Tri.

WHAT WILL MAKE ME A GOOD MENTOR:
I've got four years of triathlon training and racing under my belt.  I've also been able to do this while keeping a healthy marriage and enjoying my three boys.  I enjoy helping people and let's have some FUN!

Mark,
I'm not sure if I'm doing this right, but I would like to join your mentor group.  I'm training for my first Tri in Aug, and I could sure use some pointers.  Let me know if you are interested.

I'd love to re-up and stay in this group. It's been great so far, so why leave?

Name: Robert
Years: This will be #3.

My 2011 season has seen some races come and go, some hit the schedule only to be removed, but I'm planning on having a pretty big year and if I play my cards right, it should be.

It started with a PR on a 10mi in Jan & a half marathon in Feb. Then unfortunately, due to some work related scheduling I had to drop races in March and April, but it looks like they'll come back pretty quick.

I'm looking at a 5k swim, Buster Britton Sprint Tri, Chattanooga Waterfront (maybe), Rocketman Olympic Tri, Air Force half marathon (maybe), 1st full marathon, and a 10k.

I'm setting up the Rocketman and full marathon as an A race, so they're definitely circled.

I like the looks of the Atomic Man Half Ironman in Sept but it conflicts with the possible air force half and possibly the full marathon.

Either way, here's to another run of the mentor group!

If you need a earlier HIM, there is one in Nashville on September 10.  Nashvegas!

I may do it and AtomicMan.

What's on everyone's schedule today?

I've got a 3000 yard swim and some bike intervals at .95 FTP.

2k fast swim (maybe see if I can hold 100s on 1:20 this time - or maybe not ;-) ).  45 minute Jorge inspired pukefest on trainer.

Oh, and I'm back!

About me:  In Bham, Al.  I flog myself to the tune of about an hour a day doing this stuff.  Next up is a 3.3 mile OWS.  Should be awesome.

I'm going to shoot for 5x5 minutes, with with 3 minutes of spinning at .7 to .8 of FTP between.

I did 40 minutes on the bike this morning which included 4x4mins (3:20 at 75% and then 20 sec all out).  A lot more brutal then I expected.

So far I really like the plan I have from Jorge.  The swimming seems about right and the bike workouts (while shorter then I was doing last year) are really tough.  The run volume is too low but he's helping me adjust it upward.

BTW, do you think Abita and Hurricanes are a good nutrition and hydration strategy?

As promised.

NAME: mashmead / Mike
STORY:
2010 was my first year of triathlon.

I found tris after my wife and I moved from Dallas, TX to Jackson, MS.  I had played about 10 years of good rugby (none of that beer drinking stuff, although there was a fair amount of it).  I had no intention of playing when we moved (worn out, burnt out and beat up) but had nothing to fill the gap either.

So I ran some.  Then I swam some.  Then I noticed I was 2/3 of the way to a triathlon so got in touch with a friend for some advice.  He introduced me to BT, I got a bike and signed up for a local super sprint.  Fast forward to the end of the year and I had completed 3 sprints and an oly and somehow found the podium for all but the first race.

Last weekend I completed my first century ride and I’ve tentatively put Nashvegas HIM on my schedule for this year.  But of course will need the help of a mentor group to pull it off.

FAMILY STATUS: Married, no kids, 1 dog.  My wife is a fellow BTer (Mary A) and started racing midway through last season.

CURRENT TRAINING:  Training for an oly in June.  Might change that if I decide to go for Nashvegas.

2011 RACES:  Soak Up the Sun sprint in May, Heatwave Classic oly in June and tentatively Nasvegas HIM in Sept.

WEIGHTLOSS:  I don’t check in with the scale much.  Last I checked I was at 167ish (I’m 6ft tall, usually).  I did lose about 10 lbs when I stopped playing rugby.

WHAT WILL MAKE ME A GOOD MENTEE:
It’s my 2nd year and I still don’t know everything.

I like that suggestion. So based on that, how dangerous would it be to register for NashVegas Sept 5 knowing Marine Corp is Oct 30, and MCM is the A race?

Going realistically, the AF half is probably not going to happen. I'd like to, and another racing partner has already signed up, but I doubt I'll go that crazy.

Thoughts?

WOW. First year, and found 2 podiums? That's awesome. I've found 1 podium once in my life and it was probably the slowest 5k ever run...! Congrats!

This AM was a 60 min run mostly spent in z1, still recovering from this weekend.

This PM will be a 60 min easy ride.  May do it on the trainer if I don't get home from work with enough daylight left.
