Subject: How did you pick your seat?

Ok..  I've adjusted and adjusted and adjusted but my butt doesn't like the seat that came on my bike so I want to start searching for something better for me.  My problem is I don't want to drop $100-$200 a seat and not like them just to sell at a loss and try something else.  So how did you go about narrowing down seat choices and giving new seats a try?  I'm ok for about an hour and a half but then I start getting uncomfortable and squirmy.  Especially on flat rides where I don't stand up any.  Feels like I'm sitting on my taint a little and "the boys" kinda want to go numb sometimes.  that's not pleasant.

BTW.. riding a regular road bike.  Look 566

Any good LBS should have loaner saddles to allow you to test it out for a while before purchasing it.  I tested a handful of saddles for a couple of weeks each before picking the one that I have now.

Remember also, that saddle comfort is heavily impacted by your fitness.  Any saddle will be uncomfortable if you're doing a lot of riding outside of your fitness level.  Normal pedaling takes a lot of weight off of your sit bones...once fatigued, you put extra pressure on the saddle which will cause pain.  Early in the year, a lot of people want to chance saddles because they're not comfortable, when all they need to do is get their legs back into shape.  Not saying this applies here, but just thought it would be worth sharing!

I found an LBS that let me try a saddle for 60 days.  If I didn't like it, I could return for a full refund.  If they won't do that, see if you can bring your bike in and have them set it up on the trainer so you can at least sit on it for 5 min before buying (definitely not a good solution, but better than buying sight unseen).  Places like Performancebike and REI will take it back if you don't like it.  Also, Cobb saddles have a 180 day guarantee, you just gotta ship it back if you don't like it.

Regardless of terrain or saddle, I take some pressure off every once and awhile.  either by shifting a bit (fore/aft), sitting up and/or standing as the course dictates, or just lifting my butt up a little while staying in aero.

I am in the same boat.  I just shift positions and it is fine.  Some extra airflow would be nice for the under region but just sitting up gets the job done

I found my ideal seat during my bike fitting. To repeat what the others have said, a good LBS will allow you to try first then commit to buying. I tried 5 different seats before I finally found one that I can live with on long rides. A good bike seat is like a good pair of running shoes or a perfect fitting pair of goggles, they are invaluable. Any good bike shop will understand the need to try before a commitment.

For me, it was trial and error. I went through three saddles before feeling really comfortable.

Yup, same here.  I went through about 6 saddles (a Cobb V-Flow Plus, Terry Butterfly, Selle Prolink Gel Flow, San Marco Aspide Glamour, Brooks Team Pro, Specialized Toupe) before finally settling on my current saddle - a Specialized Ruby 155.

Saddles are like shoes.  They need to get used to your body and your body needs to get used to them.

Worst case scenario if you can't find a return policy or loaner you can always buy a couple and sell the ones you don't like on the forums here.  There's always people looking to snatch some up.
