Subject: frame size question...
Can I safely assume that I would ride the same size Tri-bike as Road bike? My bike, a 54cm Cervelo Soloist fits fine (I was fitted). If I wanted to buy a used Cervelo P2, would I look for the same size frame, or is it possible that it could be different?

No, it's possible that you would need a larger road bike frame than TT bike.  I ride a 52 tri bike and a 54 road bike.

crud! Not the answer I was hoping for. So, with that said, I guess it's best to buy the first one brand new then?

Not that I wouldn't rather have a new one, but much harder to convince the cheif financial officer (wife).

well, maybe... but I can't say that just one ride would be enough to know if I'd be comfortable for miles and miles. Seems like a lot of money to not be totally sure.

Not necessarily.  If you can test ride something that's very similar w/ regards to the geometry of a used bike you may be looking at, then it would be fine.  Unfortunately there is no 'standard' between brands, so what would be a 58 in one brand may be a 'large' in another or a 56 in brand x might fit you better than brand y.  It's all going to come down to what fits you best.  No one can give you a definitive answer because of that.

Yes or no.

Seriously, you could very well fit perfectly on the same tri bike size as your road bike. Commonly, people go one size smaller to accomodate a lower position (short head tube) and it does happen that you need to go small to have a functional reach (less common as tri bikes are designed with a shorter top tube and different seat tube/head tube angles).

I ride a 60 cm road bike and a 61 cm tri bike.

But I think my road bike is the wrong size. Wink

I really appreciate all of the assistance here. I had a nice conversation with one of the states few Cervelo dealers today (the on-site bike fit guy), and he was nice enough to point me in the right direction. Still not sure if I'll look for new or used yet, but I guess we'll see.

At any rate, thanks again for the feedback, I'd have hated to purchase the wrong thing.

get a fit using the exit fit system by fist and then use those coordinates for stack and reach and voila you know exactly what tri bike size and brand will fit you.  its a bit pricey but more than worth it.  then you can shop around if the p2 isnt right for you.

The good news is that IF you a absolutely sold on Cervelo, they cover a very wide range of fit dimensions between their P2 and P3 lines. Chances are, you could be fit very nicely on one of them, although it could be the P3 (which costs a bit more).

Depends.

Cervelo does a very good job of "equalizing" fit coordinates so their size names are roughly comparable. That said, there are pro team cyclists who ride a 58cm Cervelo road bike, but a 54cm time trial bike- Cervelo discussed that at one of their "Brain Bike" dealer symposiums.

Ultimately, size names are arbitrary. If you visit your LBS and line up three different brands, each in their so-named "54cm" frame size, then try to make some systematic comparison of the seat tube dimensions you'll see some pretty significant discrepencies in their actual measurements. A 54cm Cervelo will measure about 51cm from center of bottom bracket to top center of seat tube, while a Felt may be exactly 54cm and Quintana Roo something else entirely.

The industry does this for a few reasons, not the least of which is to compel you to rely on your local dealer for fit services, a not entirely subverssive agenda.

In the end, you need a decent fitting by a formally trained (in triathlon fit) F.I.S.T. Certified triathlon bike fitter. I prefer a lad or lass who has done triathlons themselves. It will cost you- a few hundred bucks likely- and it will be worth about what you pay in saved time, enhanced performance and potential discomfort avoidance. Also, there is something to be said for getting on the right equipment from the onset- there is a true value to that.
