enginerd - 2011-04-12 6:39 PM I once tried two different 24 hour fitness pools here in SF.  Both had water that had a greenish tint to them (hmmm....what's yellow that could turn blue water green?).  Worst of all, the water tasted funny.

Now thats funny.

I grew up swimming in the barge canal in upstate New York.  The water was brown and up and down the canal there was raw sewage being dumped in.  In Syracuse the lake was so polluted that swimming was denied and dead fish were on the shore line.  We didn't even throw our coxwains in after winning at crew (rowing) as tradition calls for.

So swimming in a pool where I can actually see is fine with me.

Hey Cyborqueen, you think Lake Mead or Lake Las Vegas is clean?

I swim at a 24 hour fitness and the water is fine - clean and perfectly chlorinated.

Like anything else, it probablydepends on location.

The cleanest pools have a very low "chlorine" smell. The ones that smell strongly like chlorine don't generally have more chlorine than normal. They actually are dirtier, but you smell the chloramines that are caused by body oils, grime, urine, etc when combined with the chlorine. So the more a pool smells like chlorine, the dirtier it really is. Nice huh?

And this^^

One thing that makes me wonder about this , is every time I swim in the extremely stinky chlorine smelling gym pool my skin burns, and face turns white, or ashen..sweat will smell like chlorine for days afterwards. The other chlorine lap pool I swim in I experience none of these issues. If low Chorine were the problem with these pools they why do they burn us up like we've been dumped in a chem vat?
