High Five Events
Sunny
Total Time = 49m 39s
Overall Rank = 13/???
Age Group = Veterans 40-49
Age Group Rank = 1/54
Pre-race routine:

Early to the race and minimal breakfast. Banana about an hour before race time. Had a decent rack spot and lots of room to maneuver.
Event warmup:

None, really. Chilly air in the morning made me not want to get wet before I had to.
Swim
  • 00m
  • 328 yards
  • / 100 yards
Comments:

No real idea where I was in the pack. Seemed like there were a good number of yellow swim caps ahead of me getting out of the water, but on a swim that short, who knows? If I had to guess, I'd say my split was between 4:45 and 5:00 minutes.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. That was my first swim since September. I suppose I could've trained the swim more, but it wasn't really necessary with such a short race leg.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

First T1 of the year and my rust showed. Had a little trouble getting on the bike and was much slower getting in the shoes than I'd hoped to be. Didn't cost me too much, though, I'm sure.
What would you do differently?:

Get over my ego and practice the flying mount and foot-to-shoe insert a few times before the race.
Bike
  • 00m
  • 11.2 miles
  • 0.00 mile/hr
Comments:

Since I have no data from the race, I'm just guessing here, but my guess is based on the fact that I played leapfrog all day with the overall masters winner. He started the bike just a few seconds before me and finished just a few seconds after me. His bike split was 29:42, so I'm going to guess that mine was around 29:35ish or so. That's roughly 22.7 mph. Just a guess.
What would you do differently?:

Not a lot. I started hard and finished hard. Super sprints are great for just gutting out a hard, high-power ride.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

T2 is always my best. I was in and out in no time. Overall master's winner was maybe 2 seconds behind me on the way out.
What would you do differently?:

Not a thing.
Run
  • 12m 59s
  • 2 miles
  • 06m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

Run was pretty good, considering I haven't run at all since early February due to training for bike races. I'll take a 6:30/mile pace any day of the week.
What would you do differently?:

HTFU and push harder in the last 1/4 mile so that I don't lose the overall master's race by less than 2 seconds again.
Post race
Warm down:

Chatted with the guy that pipped me for the overall masters and made a new friend. Beer at the beer garden, and cheering on friends that raced.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Talent.

Event comments:

Time to move up to the Open Division in this race.

Well, at least you weren't one of the guys that passed me on the run.  You were ahead of me the whole time!  Nice job.
