I love sleep, I'm just not good at it. I go to bed at a decent time, 10:00 most nights. Takes me a little while to fall asleep and then like clock work I am up at 2:30 or 3:00 every single freaking night. I am usually up for an hour or more struggling to fall back asleep. Sometimes longer. I HATE it. If I take something (Tylenol P.M. or something) then I drag around all day long. I guess this is just the way my body functions. I used to think it was from my mind racing about work but I quit working to stay home with my children 3 years ago and it hasn't changed.

Around 1:30 or so every day my body just starts to shut down. I get so sleepy. The good thing is my children both take naps so about 2 or 3 days a week I get a little 30 min cat nap too.

jamgam - 2011-04-18 6:48 PM I'm a horrible sleeper.  I have plenty of time to get 8 hours worth but I can't do it.  I fall asleep fine but normally can't stay asleep.  I'm in bed by 10 most days but typically wake up 3 or 4 times during the night and end up moving to the couch or staying up for an hour or two then going back to sleep.  More than 2 hrs straight sleep for me is very rare.  I probably need to go to the doc or get a sleep study done

Case in Point ...  this past evening ..

Bed at 10pm and asleep immediately

Woken up at 12:30 am - bathroom, move to couch.  Typically have to go hit the can doesn't wake me up, but once I wake up and realize I have to go I can't fall back asleep until I do

awake at 3:30 am back asleep before 4

awake permanently at 5:30 am

And I would consider this a good nights sleep compared to my normal

I work midnights and have a family so sleep during the week is pretty much just doesn't happen.  My typical scheduled is 00:00 (midnight) - 08:00 work. (Swim or work-out at 5:00 during lunch hour), home by 9:00am. bed by 9:30 or 10:00 and hopefully can fall asleep within an hour.  Up at 2:00 - 3:00 pm for second workout and to spend time with the family.  Back in bed by 7:30pm or 8:00pm if i'm lucky and a nap till 11:00pm when I get up and head back to work.

Friday night I sleep like a 'normal' person and generally get 8 hours, likewise on Saturday.  Sunday I try and lay down around 7:00 pm so I can nap before headed back to work.

A you can see, it's not an easy schedule, but I just don't know another way where I can devote time to family and triathlons.

I get to bed about 9:30 pm, asleep by 10, and up by 4 am.  I go to work early so that I can get off by 2:30 to be home when my boys get off the schoolbus.  It's a rough schedule for me because I seem to need about 8 hours of sleep.  I am constantly tired at work and have to have caffiene to function.  This isn't so much driven by my training schedule, but by the need to be there for my family.  I don't like the fact that I seem to need 2 cups of coffee in the morning to stay awake and a cup of tea in the afternoon before a run or ride.

I am lucky that my work hours are flexible and I am able to swim or ride during lunch.  Looking forward to the summer, when the kids are out of school!

Not even close.  I am in a perpetual state of sleep deprivation and grab little naps wherever I can.

I've always taken my sleep seriously. When I was in high school, if there wasn't anything going on after school, I would often sleep 12+ hours. (Albeit that is unhealthy as well)

Nowadays I generally get 7-8 hours every night. Anything less than 7 and I have a hard time training the next day.

Usually, yes. I've learned through experience that it's very hard for me to do well at my job, stay healthy, and train with any quality when averaging less than 8 hours per night. I really admire people who can get by with less; I simply can't despite trying many times. Maybe because my job (elementary teacher) exposes me to lots of colds and other viruses, and sleep helps the immune system.  I come from a family of big sleepers. My mom is in her 70's, works out a couple of hours a day, and sleeps at least 12 hours a day including naps. We have two "settings"--"full speed ahead" and "system crash", and are both prone to insomnia if we DON'T work out. I try to get to bed by 10 every night (up at 6), 9 if doing an early AM workout (up at 4:45). It doesn't always happen; sometimes it's more like 7 hours.  I make up for it on weekends, when I do long runs/bricks. I usually follow them with a nap of 2 hours or so. Easy to do in the heat of the day in the tropics--most of the country is asleep too!

I do not get nearly enough sleep....night owl by nature.  I HATE going to bed early!  I run based on HR and what I notice MOST of the time is that if I don't get enough sleep my workouts dont go as well.  Even on my easy runs my pace for my HR zone could easily be 30+ seconds per mile slower if I run on too little sleep.  I know all the downsides of HR training (not looking to get into that here) but one advantage it has for me is that it screams out, "Hey your HR is way too high, you need to start sleeping more"  If I get plenty of sleep, my pace drops for any given HR.  Because race day (IMLP is fast approaching) I've recently been trying to think at night, "How do I want tomorrow's workout to go?"  Because I want it to go well, its worth going to bed earlier.  This line of thinking is the only thing that has worked to help me DECIDE to go to bed earlier occasionally.  Hopefully it will become the norm within a month haha.

Some bright guy once said "Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise."  He might have been onto something.

During the week I don't get enough.  I get up everyday during the week at 4:10AM and I'm at the Gym at 5:00AM when they open to workout.  Put the kids to bed around 8:00 - 8:30PM and then I go to bed, but it ALWAYS takes me 30 - 60 minutes to fall asleep.  So I'm probably sleeping after 9:00PM, so at best 7hrs, but usually my dog or kids will wake me up in the middle of the night, since I'm a light sleeper.  So on Saturdays and Sundays,  I usually sleep in until 6:30 - 7:30AM to catch up a little.

Any thoughts on falling asleep easier at night?  If I could fall asleep within 15 minutes of laying down, that will help me a ton Surprised

I get 8+ hours a night. I am in bed around 10:00 and usually up around 6:30. Occasionally I'll get up early for a morning workout but if I have to get up early I go to bed earlier. I'm fortunate enough to be able to do midday workouts so my double days are lunchtime and evening.

Sleep is so important to recovery yet it's the first thing to go for so many people.

I got 5 hours last night because I slept in an extra 1/2 hour. I rarely get more than six. It sucks but I have committed to being a dad and husband first, triathlete last. This means that many of my workouts come at 5 am or 10 pm so it doesn't interfere with family.

My dream is a month where I could get eight to nine hours a night. My performance would be better for sure.

There are just some days, like today, where I can not get up for that early morning workout......

During the week I'm usually in bed by 10PM and then get up at 5:30AM.

I generally do my longer swim and bike workouts on the weekends and will normally catch a short nap on Saturday and Sunday afternoons afterwards.

I go through stretches where I don't sleep well, waking up in the middle of the night for several hours.  Most of the time I can attribute it to either stress or too much caffeine.  I've talked to my doctor about it, but he said it was no big deal and to just listen to my body.

Don't remember where but saw an article that some sleep specialists stated it is better to wake up the same time everyday and change the time you go to bed than the other way around.  I have four wake up times depending on day and workout plan 5:15, 6:15, 6:45 and when the kids wake me up.

I find if I get more than 8hrs I need a nap 5-7hrs no nap? I agree with what someone said above, give your body what it tells you it needs, we all know we get stronger and better when we sleep.

No.  I know that it would benefit me to sleep more but I get by on usually 6-hours a night during the week.  On the weekend I might get 8-hours.  If I feel I am getting sick I will try to get 8 or more hours daily until I feel better.

Don't think I get enough as in optimal, but enough to get by.  I'm up at 4:15ish and in bed by 9:30ish, asleep by 10ish, so on average I get about 6.5 hours a night.  By the end of the week it catches up with me a bit... Fridays I'm usually pretty tired, but then sleep in until 5:30 -  6:00 on Sat and Sun.

I am starting a new HIM training program and will take a hit in the hours I get to sleep. I will be getting up at 4:30 to get in a run or bike before I have to be in to work at 7. I work out in the evening a few times during the week but try to keep that time open for family activities. Put the kiddos in bed about 8:30-9 and try and spend some time with the wife with no kids and a quite house before I go to bed around 10-11. So I get about 6 hours of sleep.
