Set Up Events

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 35m 33s
Overall Rank = 88/251F
Age Group = 50-54F
Age Group Rank = 5/11
Pre-race routine:

got a fair sleep; with a 10am race start we were able to sleep until 6am!
Dressed, ate, packed the car, and drove 45 minutes to the race site.
Did packed pickup and chip pickup, and then set up my transition area; deposited my swim stuff back at the car and then made contact with my tri club buddies, and then just tried to stay warm and calm
Event warmup:

got my wetsuit on about 20 minutes before my wave and then got into the water to start getting used to the (COLD) temperature

followed the time-honored tradition and peed in my suit ;)
Swim
  • 20m 30s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 44s / 100 meters
Comments:

it might have been the strong crosswind, but I kept finding myself way too far right on the first leg, into (and even beyond) the buoys; did better after that, overall probably just swam too slow
What would you do differently?:

this was my first OWS of the season so I'm sure that contributed
Transition 1
  • 02m
Comments:

I nailed T1! First in AG, and I probably could have been a few seconds faster if I hadn't knocked my helmet and glasses into the grass
What would you do differently?:

be a little less clumsy; know ahead of time that my wetsuit is not going to come off my heels without some hand help and don't waste the time trying to get it off my stepping on the legs
Bike
  • 42m 56s
  • 12 miles
  • 16.77 mile/hr
Comments:

bike time included a looong, muddy run from TA to the mount/dismount line and the same looong run back at the end

I pushed the ride hard, but tried to keep enough in reserve for a good run

a 27yo guy pulled along side me at one point and said "You're 50? You're killing it!" Love it!
What would you do differently?:

I sure it could have helped to have had the chance to pre-drive the course, but it was a good ride overall
Transition 2
  • 01m 52s
Comments:

couldn't feel my toes (cold!)

had some trouble getting my bike to hang onto the rack by the brakes, so lost some time with that
What would you do differently?:

next time just rack the bike by the seat nose
Run
  • 28m 16s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 05s  min/mile
Comments:

held a good pace on the flats and downhills, but the uphills killed me. The last 1/2 mile was an uphill, muddy, cruel trail run. Many lost shoes in the muddy ditched we had to cross!

Finished with 3rd place AG, by far my best tri run result, so I'm pretty happy with that
What would you do differently?:

know that it's "only 5k" and run it harder?
Post race
Warm down:

talking and walking

What limited your ability to perform faster:

wind; need more OWS

Awesome race!! You killed it!!

They thought the swim might have been long on Saturdays race, wonder if the bouys were correct for the sprint?

That mud was even worse in the rain for the International Distance group on Saturday.

Great race!

Yeah, in the next couple of weeks, we will get some more hill running in your schedule. I hadn't been doing much of it because of your Achilles tendon injury... but you are all healed up, I think we can move forward with some hill training. Lucky you!

That's cool that what the 27 year old said! Although, you do train and race like an athlete in her 30's!

Congrats on a nice first race to start a wonderful season!
