Anyone else doing this one?

And I'm kind of thinking a wetsuit might be a dandy idea. Does anyone know what the water temperature might be at that time?

Thanks in advance!

Oh yes, you will want a wetsuit!  I ran it last year there was one guy in a speedo with no wetsuit and he was kind of blue by the end of the swim.

I would guess temps in low 60's for the water, especially with how cool it's been lately.\

If you have a wetsuit, bring it!  If you don't have one, beg borrow or steal!

LOL.

Thank you for the heads up Ryan. I'm not much into freezing my (insert proper anatomy reference here) off for my first triathlon.

2009 was better as I didn't wear a wetsuit but my time suffered.  Lots of chop.

But last year... whew I would have been sorry without the rubber layer!

Good luck at your first tri.  I'm thinking about running it but too much on the plate at the moment.

I plan on attending, and that could be an understatement....

My birthday is tomorrow and it looks like the Tri is going to be my big present, with my parents paying for it and my wife making sure her work schedule will allow me to be gone all weekend.

This one is a big deal to me, as the one last year was my FIRST ever tri, and I pretty much spent the weekend there.  I helped set it up, raced the sprint, and helped pack it up.  I even got a prize during the awards ceremony for all my work.  (Going to be a while before I can claim one the 'regular' way.)  The RD and other staff helped me a LOT and I plan to show up and help out again this year.

Of course, now I have a tri-bike and lots of training so I will run the Oly this time around and see how close I can get to the time I did on the sprint before!

As far as the water, I believe it was 60? last year.  There were a few of us without wetsuits.  Cold, yes, but I didn't hear anybody WITH one rambling about how warm the water felt either...I forgot earplugs though and I couldn't walk straight when I got out of the lake.

I wont have a wetsuit yet this year either, but if I happen upon anyone my size with one to loan out that could change.

Good race, great staff too!

wetsuitrental.com

They apply the rental fees to the purchase of a wetsuit at a later date, similar to a "rent to own" program.  If you are interested in purchasing one in the future....  Won't see you there, my first tri will be Bike Source/Heritage Park a week prior to the Kansas City.  Good luck!

Please tell me that Growler is in the goody bag, that thing is awesome!

Next question. Sleeveless or full sleeve?

I appreciate the input guys, I'm really still a little overwhelmed with all the gear still. I'm think Xterra Volt or rental. Can't really beat $99. I'd like to do a few open water swims before then, so I am hesitant about the rental suit. Although, that seems like a great way to try suits out if I stay with the sport after the first one.

The growlers were the podium awards.  I got mine for busting my rear all weekend, that's the story anyway.  I doubt I was pathetic enough to earn it out of sympathy...

I survived without a wetsuit, but I wouldn't mind having one.  Don't freak out if you don't get one yet. I'm saying get one if you can afford it and want it, but you don't NEED it.

I haven't swam in one at all, ever, but I am leaning towards sleeveless myself.  I don't like the idea of restricting movement at all up top, and I KNOW my swim is all arms anyway.

No matter how you got that thing, it is way cool. Getting one for helping out is even better. I've yet to volunteer any races, but they wouldn't happen if it wasn't for them.

If it had a little Bvld. in it a guy would be set if you're a beer person. ( I am)

Would be great to meet a few BT people that day if anyone is inclined. Everybody here so far seems to be cool.

I will be doing the KC Triathlon and it will be my first tri as well.  Was debating between BikeSource Tri and this one but decided to do this one as BikeSource Tri swim portion sometimes gets canceled so you end up doing a Duo.   The KC Tri swim portion distance is at the upper end of my swim distance but with a wet suit on I should do ok.

I am doing the KC Tri sprint as my first triathlon as well. I am renting a wetsuit from wetsuitrental.com as the lake is sitting at about 62 degrees right now and I doubt that will change much this next week.  I went out to the Bikesource Triathlon this morning and it was rather cold with many of the athletes wearing long sleeves. Hopefully it is warmer next weekend. Good luck to everyone else who is racing especially the other first-timers.

I highly recommend a 5-10 min warmup/de-cold water shock swim before your swim heat @ the KC TRI. If you don't your going to spend the first 10 min of your swim Sunday trying to get your breathing rythm right.

I second the motion for a 5-10 "warm-up".  You may freeze a little waiting for your wave start, but after swimming Heritage yesterday the first 9 minutes (that was my entire swim time) my breathing was OFF.... that water was cold and the week doesn't look any better temp wise!

I volunteered for a little while Sunday, and I took my stuff along in case I could do an OWS. Then I got out of the car, lol. Big ole well done to everyone that did that tri. I was personally glad I wasn't doing it. It was very, very educational to sit back and watch in the transition area. You might have saw me, "Bike exit to the left" was basically all I had to say and then point. Although I did get sharpie a bunch of people early on. Met Montyzooma, and got to talk to a lot of very cool people. I missed the gentlemans name that I was talking with in the transition area, but he was gracious enough to bs with me about a few things. All in all it was a confidence booster to see a lot of people just like me out there. Plus, a lot I'm way better shape and some maybe in a little worse shape. I'm pretty excited about Sunday now !!

Is it just me, or has the bike course reverted back to the "old" course from last year? I could've sworn this year's course was no longer looping behind the community college.

I only now went to look at the course map again after following the whole Rev3 pro women's race situation this past weekend and the whole "racers should know the course" stipulation. If the bike course did change it would be nice for race organizers to pass along the information.

I too, remember seeing a new map back in February? I thought that map showed the Oly course as one loop and went further south? It does look like they took the little route through the subdivision out though.

They probably thought they had a new route and ran into logistic problems with the city, county, law enforcement, etc.

I am also still waiting for my coffee mug since I registered before the end of February. In the mail before the snow melts?

Brrrrrr, brrrr, brrrrr. The water temp at Longview Lake is 61*F and estimated @ 59*F. I don't know the difference between the two but both are coooooooooooooool.

All I need are some 3 foot swells to almost match my most miserable swim, which was the 2009 Door County 70.3. 58*F water temp with 3 foot lake swells, in a sleavless suit, and it was fun not!

60º is what I recorded in my race report last year.

The KC Tri (sprint) was my first race ever, and no wetsuit. I still don't own one.  I'm planning on do the race this weekend (Oly) and while I'm not looking forward to freezing in the lake again, I'm more worried about the weather than the water temp.

No wetsuit!?  Ouch!

At least temps should be in 60's or low 70's so your feet won't freeze on the bike ride.

But yes, the weather forecast isn't exactly promising as far as rain and storms.  Makes me somewhat appreciative I didn't shell out the $100 to race and have the weather be iffy.

Good luck.

White top, black shorts, and obnoxious yellow shoes. And probably a goofy looking black Nike visor.

Bt'ers, make sure you intoduce yourselves this weekend!

I had it in my head that it was a 750m swim, website says 500m though. That almost made my whole weekend. If the weather cooperates just a little I think it will be a good time.

Personal goals:

Possible - 1:20

Reasonably confident - 1:30

Last chance - Finish

I hope the chance of T-Storms continues to drop. Otherwise great race day temps and a SW wind which in my mind makes for a great bike leg, since when going south and west you are in the trees or hiding behind hills. It should make crossing the damn and going north on Raytown Rd a speed feast!
