Who's in for Sprint #1 at White Lake?  This will be my first OWS and I am a little nervous.  I guess I'll just start on the outside at the back and follow the crowd.  Does anyone know if there is a place to get in and practice the weekend before the race?

Hi, I have heard this is a beautiful lake to swim in very clear and only about 10' deep at its deepest point. Yes, you can jump in and practice all you want. Have fun and good luck.

Bob,

I went to White Lake this morning to ride the course for the Half #1.  I have been there twice this month, and both times the gates have been locked so I'm not sure if you will have a chance to swim (at the race site) before race weekend.  Stacey and I will be there all weekend, so hopefully we'll see you there.  Good Luck!!

Alan

Hi Alan, I guess if things don't change I'll have to swim in the channel at Wrightsville Beach next weekend.  It's a few degrees colder than White Lake but at least it's closer and I can probably get a couple of guys from my tri team to swim with me.  Good luck with the Half, I plan on following you on the internet Live thanks to Set=Up Events.

Bob,

That is cool about the live timing.  I heard earlier in the year, that Set Up was working on it but didn't know when they were going to roll it out.  Stacey will follow my progress, too, so that she doesn't have to hang out at the race site for 6 hours and will know when to meet me at the finish.

MaesMama - 2011-04-24 10:57 PM Do we want to do a BT gathering??

I don't know if a "Gathering" is the right word for two of us, but I'm up for it.  The biggest problem is that I have never been to White Lake so I don't know where or when.  Any suggestions?  And if I've been paying attention only MaesMama and me are doing Sprint #1.  Dixby and Alan (japarker24) are doing the Half on Saturday.  MaesMama, this is also my first OWS so I also plan on starting on the outside at the back.  It may take a little longer but I'm not ready for the washing machine effect yet.

One of my tri club members loaned me his old wetsuit for White Lake.  I tried it on and it fits!  Now I have to get out and practice with it a few times.  Oh, and hope that the lake doesn't get too warm with this hot spell we're having.

Bob,

I am in for the Sprint #1 in two weeks and Riverwood this weekend. I haven't gotten any OWS or wetsuit swims, but going to get in the pool with my wetsuit this week, so we shall see! I'll look for you there again this time! I will be looking for a few people too!

Wow Andrew, I just saw your race schedule!  You won't have any time to train.  Looks like a race a week.  Good luck with that.  It must be nice to be young.  Do you (Or anyone) know of a spot at White Lake that we can meet at?  Some of the time I'll be at my tri club's tent (TriWilmington).  Just look for the old bald guy with the very short grey beard.

Bob,

Probably the best spot to meet someone would be the beach volleyball court.  It is beside the basketball court where they set up a row of port a johns.  The other areas are pretty busy race mornings:  The picnic shelter is where they have body marking and post race food/drink and the cafeteria building is where packet pick up is held so that, too, gets crowded/busy pre race.

Alan

Edit:  Good Luck everyone on Sprint #1.  If I'm feeling well enough after the Saturday Half, Stacey and I'll come out to cheer for you guys.

OK Dave, I guess it's at the beach volleyball courts.  Either before of after the race?  Or both??

I'm in for sprint 1 too.  I did it in 09 as my first ows race.   I hated every minute of it but that was a mental thing for me.  The lake is beautiful, shallow and calm so dont be like me!  I havent gotten out for an ows yet or put my wet suit on in 2 years but I am ready for it.  I would love to meet up- I will be the short one in Try Sports Orange!

I'm racing the first sprint on the 8th as well. @blynot - This will also be my first OWS. I'm gonna hit Jordan Lake a couple of times in the coming week to get the feel. After sharing lanes at the Y with plenty of people who can't control their own limbs, I think I'm ready for the chaos, but need to work on sighting. I'm really psyched for the race. Hope to see ya'll out there. I'll be the young guy without a wetsuit sporting a handlebar mustache.

Welcome Martin, don't forget that we're going to gather at the beach volleyball court.  Maybe before the start although people will probably be busy then so probably after and we can swap excuses as to why we didn't do better.   Our group is growing and now consists of MaesMama (Kara), brazee (Andrew), tjdave (Dave), Roadtoad22 (Paula), MJacaruso (Martin) and me blynott (Bob).

Hi Alan, I think that I'm glad it will be wetsuit legal although I've only worn mine in the shower so far.  I'm actually having more trouble with the swim cap.  That is very annoying!     Bob

I am liking that 72 degree temp!! Perfect for me. My pool is close to 80! The closer to that the water is, the less I will stress about my asthma. Last amother's Day race I did, I had an asthma attack due to the water temp. It sucked.
