I haven't done much mountain biking this year and decided to go on two 20 mile rides this weekend. I thought all the time on the road bike would have helped but I got my butt kicked. Taking my bike for a walk up the mountain was pretty humbleing when guys with calfs that looked like cut glass passed me by.

I actually did pretty well and had a great time but I thought the road work would have improved my performace more.. What a rush it was.

You ride mountains for strength, roads for endurance...unless you have been doing sustained climbs on the road, mountain biking can be a rude awakening....I find that mountain biking helps me on the road, just more power in those legs when you need it....

I want to get out on the trails but I don't for the very reasons you wrote about. You are a great person for going out and not letting your "not cut glass calves" stop you and if you keep it up your calves will be cut soon too.

Thanks for the heads up. I was just talking to a training partner yesterday about going out mountain biking when I'm done with my final tri of this season (a 1/2 IM end of October). I already thought I need to atleast get on the mountain bike on the road just to get use to that set up again but I'll go out for a few short trail rides before planning anything long. It's been 5 years since I've been mountain biking.

I ride my mtn bike to work and occasionaly play on some of the trails by the river. I figure that the fat tires on pavement will help my leg strength.

The last summer that I mountain biked (4yrs ago), I regularly left good chunks of my skin on the mountain. Now, I'm kinda a fraidy cat, but would like to get back on some real trails, AFTER my last tri of the season tho. No need to tempt the mountain gods...
