Subject: 50 mile bike ride FAIL!

I am training for my first HIM which is on July 10 and today as part of the training I had to ride 50 miles. It was a little windy but not super windy. and I was fine for about the first 25 miles or so and slowly started to fade.  I had all my nutrition with me and water and took it when I should I just kept getting more and more fatigued and ended up quiting at 38 miles.

I have only ridden 45 miles or more about 5 times 45 miles twice in the last month as part of the training but I always find it really really hard, not that I think it should be easy but I just have a hard time.  Anyway I am really disappointed considering I have to ride 56 miles after swimming 1.2 miles and then after riding run a half marathon, starting to get worried about it.

How hard were you riding for the first part of the ride?  You might try backing off a little bit just to get some more distance in.  Endurance base building doesn't need to be a super hard effort, just get out there and ride the distance and more.

not that hard around 15mph when I am going all out I usually go around 18mph or so during a sprint or olympic race. I have been trying to slow down so 15mph has been my overall average on the longer rides.

Nothing in life is ever really a FAIL, it is always a learning experience.  Remeber that you are probably at peak training right now, and come race day you will be nicely tapered and have 'fresh legs'.

I could be off on this (I'm sure someone will correct me if necessary), but I'm certain you have a pace at which you can do a 50 mile bike ride. I would suggest you back off until you find that pace, then work on increasing it. The longest rides for the Oly program I just finished were nearly that long, and I just accepted they would be slow and focused solely on getting to the end, rather than any concern about my speed. I would also suggest if you're getting to the point where you think you need to stop short, take a 5 minute break and see if you can continue

How long have you been biking? whats your average month look like?

It sounds to me like you just need more seat time and slowly work in longer and longer rides.

Wind stopped me on a planned 60 miler a few weekends ago.  I called it quits around 42 and called in, and finished at about 48 miles.  (I kept going until I knew my ride was close by and stopped at a landmark.)

The next weekend it wasn't quite so windy and I finished it.  Last 10 miles drained me and I couldn't dream of running/walking 13 miles right afterward.  But you know what?  The HIM I am considering was NOT the next day or the next week so this was a step towards it, not a test!

Next time you try you will likely make an adjustment based on how you felt this time around. Live and learn and improve!

I rode about 37 miles tonight and my back was hurting.  I learned I should probably work on strengthening my back a bit.  Better hit the weight room a little more often now that race season is upon me.

Since your logs aren't filled out it's kind of hard to tell.  But biking twice a week for a max average around 35ish miles a week isn't enough.

My race is 10 days out and I had a brick planned tonight, I knew it was my last brick and I had to lay it out tonight. I had a friend with me and we killed it, only problem was, planned ride was 14 miles and with the MAJOR headwinds I started crashing at mile 12. I pulled for the first 10. Basically my friend was there as a backup in case of anything serious happening.

We then jogged/walked for a little over a mile. The winds took a lot out of me tonight. Wind can do that. I've ridden in hurricanes before and they can take out the best of us.

Sometimes discretion is the better part of valor. Just depends on how tight you are to race time.

Sounds like you need to back off on your intensity and just focus on getting the miles done. Do you own a heart rate monitor. I use mine to monitor my intensity on longer workouts.  Have you had a bike fit done? If you are not setup well, it will really start to take a toll when your rides exceed 2 hours.

Fitness, pacing and fueling.  Some combination of those three things is making it difficult for you to go for your long rides.

Fitness is just the result of steady work and effort.  Take it one day at a time.

Pacing is tricky if you're not using HR or Power to gauge your effort.  Speed can be a very poor indicator for your effort/pacing.  When you're feeling fresh at the beginning of a ride, it's easy to push a little too hard, which will make your life more difficult later in the ride.  Keep that in mind, but with time you'll get a better feel for your body and what proper pacing feels like.

Fueling is tricky as well.  You mentioned that you "had all my nutrition", but are you sure it was enough calories?  Did you start fueling well before you started the ride?  For my longer rides, I take in 250-300 calories/hr.

It's normal to feel frustrated and disappointed, this is part of the learning process.  As you get fitter you also learn more about your body and how to properly execute the rides.  As long as you keep going out there, you'll get where you want to be eventually!
