I don't think I could- it's so unhealthy.  I can't stand ciagrette smoke and I hate 2nd hand smoke. I wouldn't want to kiss someone who smells like an ash tray and has yellow teeth!   The quality of teeth (and lungs) is extremely important to me!

I have dated smokers in the past, and besides the health factor, the problem is that they can't tell that they smell like smoke.  It IS like kissing an ashtray, which kills any sort of mood you might have been having - and it seems that they really can't remember that it's a huge turnoff for you, so the "please a breathmint, brush your teeth, don't expect to put out your cigarette and give me a kiss" comments never seem to stick.

I could be good friends with a smoker, but date them?  Nope.

HELL NO!

My first date with my ex, he lit up. I said then and there: "I'm sorry. I cannot date you if you smoke. Its your choice, but that is something I do not compromise." He quit. Never did it again.

When we broke up he started smoking agian, and not just cigarettes.

I did previously date a smoker for a few months about 5 years ago, but never did again after him. He only smoked outside and was fine sitting in the non-smoking section in restaurants, but the last thing he'd do before going to bed was go outside and have a smoke. Yuck, ick. The fact that he indignantly wouldn't even try to quit was a BIG sore spot for us and most certainly a factor in our eventual breakup.

The guy I've been scamming on is a smoker I think. When I was younger it didn't bother me much, but I don't really want to go there now. Jeez, another landmine for a single gal!

Absolutely not!  To me, that is the biggest turn-off.  The girl can be "smoking hot", but if I see her light-up, then I immediately lose interest!

I did, and then I ended up marrying him.  I said I'd never marry a smoker, but I did, and I love him. It's a source of tension for us and we've had many many arguments, screaming fights, discussions about it.  I do believe someday he will quit, when he's ready.  And when he's ready, I'll be there to help him through it and to put up with Mr. Crankypants that will result until he can get used to life without cigarrettes. This is one of his faults, but you'll never find a perfect person.  The question is, can you try things out with someone who smokes?  Maybe it won't work because this person smokes, or maybe it won't work for another reason, you never know.  Or maybe, it's a fault you can look over, if this person is willing to respect you for being a non smoker.

I used to be very critical of smokers and thought of them as "weak" and didn't understand why they didn't just quit. Then I tried giving up coffee for Lent one year. That was so hard---not just losing the caffeine--I was over that in a day or so. It was the way that drinking coffee was a habit---part of my morning routine---something I enjoyed after a nice meal, etc. After that experience, I decided that I would never be hyper-critical of smokers again.

I did date a smoker for a while---he was incredibly polite about it---only smoked outside (even in his own house) and never threw a butt on the ground. He had so many other wonderful qualities that I chose to overlook it. But I will say that it was annoying when we would be somewhere and he'd have to go outside for a smoke break.

As far as your original question goes, your talking dating, not marriage. I wouldn't totally rule out going on a date just for that reason---especially if they're smoking hot, to boot!

Not in a million years. That said, I was a smoker when my wife and I first met (what was she thinking?) but I quit 2 years after we were married and never looked back. My father in law used to be a HEAVY cigar smoker and everything that he went near smelled like it. We used to open the kids Christmas presents, half expecting to see a box of Phiilies Cheroots inside, the smell was that bad.

As someone with compromised lung capacity (I have asthma and suffered from brochitis often as a child), HELL NO. Not on purpose.

My ex wasn't a smoker when we got together, but I learned several years later that he was a smoker before our relationship, and he started up again.  Being the total @ss that he was at the time, he smoked inside no matter how much I coughed or insisted he stop.  He switched to cigars, which in some ways was actually a little better for me.  Being the total doormat I was at the time, I put up with it, albeit grudgingly.  Wow... I had completely forgotten all about that part of our lives together.  Now I'm getting mad all over again about it.

My mother has emphysema, which she believes was caused by living in a house with a smoker as a child.  My grandmother, her mother, died of a heart attack at age 75, although she was the healthiest, most active person I knew (outside of triathletes).  We attribute it to having lived with a smoker for so many years.

We're spoiled out here in California.  I am almost never exposed to smoke wherever I go.  On rare evenings, I can smell it whafting in from a neighbor's back yard (someone else who has to go outside to smoke, at home).  Bars and restaurants are smoke-free, thank God.  The strangest words to get used to when traveling are: "Would you like smoking or non-smoking?"  If they're in the same room, it's all a big smoking section.  Blech.

Never. Though I must say that I'm glad that my boyfriend compromised on this point when we first met. He knew I was a smoker, but I didn't smoke around him because I knew he hated it. After a little while, we hung out so much that that meant I might go 2 or 3 days without a smoke. He's admitted since that he almost dumped me for smoking in our formative stages. Glad he didn't.

LOL! Her teeth would go with your shirt.

One thing that's weird is that since my divorce it seems like every guy I've dated is a pot smoker - which I hate, never do myself - but somehow it's not as bad as cigarettes. Overload of pot-head guys...maybe it's California?

This made me laugh. Seems like she had more problems than just the smoking.

I was a "I only smoke when I drink" person on and off. I've been smoke free for over a year now. It's amazing, though. Even with how active I am, the fact that I have a marathoner boyfriend who hates smoking, and that I am a SCHOOL COUNSELOR (picture me teaching drug free lessons to elementary school students).....I still struggle with it from time to time. As in, I still find myself occassionally thinking, "Man, a smoke would be really good to take the edge off/relax me/give me a pick-me-up/make me feel better because I've had a stressful day."

And I was only a social smoker! I give A TON of credit to hard core smokers who quit. It's totally addicting.

One of my dearest friends in the world smoked for 30 years. From her teens to her mid-40s. I hated that she smoked. Her family hated that she smoked, but for whatever reason she couldn't give it up. But Patti is one of the most loving and giving people on the planet and I could go on and on about all the children she has helped in her work, etc. She finally gave up smoking about 3 years ago (after a health scare) and looks 10-years-younger as a result. We still celebrate May 16th as her "smoke free" anniversary. But I am so thankful that I didn't pass up on her friendship simply because she was a smoker. We all have bad habits, some worse than others. And I guess we have to decide what we're willing to compromise on. But please look at smoking as part of the big picture when evaluating a person's merits.

Michele makes good points... My wife smoked when we were dating and gave it up off and on for several years, finally quitting for good about a year ago.

Not me... I quit smoking 12 years ago. It is a nasty habit, my father died of lung cancer.... Horrible way to die if you ask me.
There is a whole lifestyle for smokers I do not share anymore.

that's a huge emphatic NO. I don't want to smell like I've been rolling in a campfire all the time. I hate hate hate hate smoking to the point where I hate going out to restaurants in Pittsburgh. In Columbus, there's a smoking ban and it is FABULOUS!
