Subject: Damaged carbon wheel...

Attached is a picture of a Bontrager 5.0 Aeolus. Damaged, not in a crash, but somehow during our recent move. Is this fixable? Thoughts? Safe to ride on?

If you tap on it near the ding does it sound different than in undamaged portion of rim?

Change it pitch isn't good.

I'd bring it to a dealer that has sold them to have them check it out before I rode it.

Is that a fairing on the wheel or is it structural? I have a hed jet that has damage very similar to yours, I have put a bit of packing tape on it and heated it with a blow dryer. Because it is just a fairing which does not provide structure to the wheel it's fine  and you can't tell it's damaged unless you look really closely. I have ridden a handful of times on the trainer and twice on the road; so far so good, no problems and I have been inspecting it very closely after every ride.

If the carbon is structural to the wheel, there is a guy somewhere in Minnesota that does repair work for HED...they gave me his contact info but I must have deleted it after my fix. I also spoke to a european import car garage that was willing to tackle the job as they do in-house carbon repair...maybe one exists around you?
