OC Marathon

Sunny
Total Time = 00m
Overall Rank = 61/6561
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 16/410
Pre-race routine:

Woke up had part of a cinnamon-raisin bagel with peanut butter with Amy, and a gel about 10 mins before the start.
Event warmup:

No real warmup unfortunately, by the time the shuttle bus dropped us off it was about 10 minutes to start, we did a light jog to corral A, and some very brief and incomplete stretching.
Run
  • 1h 25m 57s
  • 13.23 miles
  • 06m 30s  min/mile
Comments:

Rankings are based off my official time which isn't accurate. I was given a gun and chip time of 1:27:31. I started with Amy at the back of Corral A, I most definitely did not cross the start line at the gun time. I've written the race to see if I can get the results corrected.

Overall this was a great course, in no small part because I know Amy was on the course with me (albeit running the full marathon!!)! The sun had not risen at the start of the race, at least it seemed. The sun didn't start to become an issue until late in the race probably around mile 7 or 8, but even then I didn't have it nearly as bad as Amy. There was a concern because we had read about a wind advisory starting a sun up but the wind didn't kick in until my race was done. (poor Amy though!)

This was my first half marathon in over a year since my IT band injury. My pacing felt off, I ran some fast splits and kept surprising myself, but felt I wasn't in the shape to be running those splits. After about 4-5 miles I gave up on pacing and decided to just run, if I ran out of gas then so be it. Taking two gels with me turned out to be a good idea, I think it helped a lot.

There were time where I felt comfortable and other times I felt out of my element, but overall I was pleased.

Though twice as long as B2V, I still don't think it was nearly as painful!!
What would you do differently?:

I probably would have tried to reel myself in at the start, but adrenelin was high and I was trying to break away from the crowds, so all things considered I feel I did ok.
Post race
Warm down:

Walking and stretching in two distinct periods while I waited for Amy to finish her AMAZING Boston qualifying marathon time ;)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Running conditioning, I've only been back to running for a few months, my long runs consist of 2-3 8 mile runs a one 10 mile run.

Event comments:

I'd rate this race a lot higher, but the post race food and drink was very disappointing for the money paid. Beautiful course and scenic course and of course good weather. Cool finisher's medal though!

Congrats to you Amy, I'm proud of you and your Boston qualifying performance!!  You had it so much tougher on that course, conditions were perfect for the first half but got much tougher as the day went on!  So proud of you, can't wait to race with you again

Dang, you killed that course! Great race and congrats on the PR. And from one ITBS survivor to another, way to come back even faster. Awesome stuff.
