Pre-race routine:

Luke had me up quite a bit at night, so that was not ideal, but I woke up a little before 7, got up, at some PB and a banana. Then grazed on some powerbar burst thingies on the walk over to the race.
Event warmup:

Walk (0.75 mile) to the race, then a short jog. Felt exhausted by all that! haha. Seriously though, felt tired.

Comments:

This hurt almost from the start. I was hoping to break 20 mins and actually did for the 5K, because the route was a little longer (3.14 miles...so if you subtract out the 0.03 it comes to right around 20 mins). Anyway, the official results are official, so I missed it by 10s. Flat course needed to break 20 mins! :-) I started out quick on the downhill, as did everyone else and then we settled into fast kid in front, tank-top kid in 2, me in 3 and backward-hat guy right behind me. Stuck like that until mile 2 or so when backward-hat passed me o the first hill. He caught up with tank-top kid halfway up the cary glern hill and I resigned to finish 4th. Then I heard steps and thought "no you dont" and uppped the effort to stay in front of him. Ten I actually closed on 2 and 3 and caught them at the top of the hill. Lots opf pain at that point. The kid outkicked me in the final 0.1 mile but I passed backward-hat guy to finish 3rd...and I was DONE...had to sit down for a few seconds. A little disappointed to not break 20 mins but happy with the effort and catching those guys, and that last hill is definitely a cruel way to end the race. And even though it was a little local race, it is nice to place in something! Lots of neighbors doing this so it was fun to see them coming in.
What would you do differently?:

Be fitter...
Post race
Warm down:

Jogged home to get Ryan for his 1 mile fun run which was starting in 30 mins. Got home only to find that Becky had already taken him up. So I met them back at the clubhouse and ran Ryan's race with him. He was awesome! He said afterwards that he wanted to stop but decided he wouldn't! So on no specific training it looks like he came 7th in the <10 category (he just turned 7) in about 8:30ish. Not too shabby at all.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Overall fitness and that hill!

Event comments:

Nice little fun day at the races :-) Actually, had Luke's soccer and then Ryan's soccer after the race so it was a little crazy!

Overall: 3/103
Performance: Good
Lap 1: 6:02 (downhill part here) 6:32 6:54 (uphill back)
Course: Tough course for a 5K actually. You start on a downhill to the lake, then go around the lake and then end on Cary Glen back up (same down as for the first 0.4 mile). Its a nasty little hill.

Way to go Louis!  Nice job in that old man AG, and 3rd overall!  Well done.  Sub 20 will be easy for you next time.  Just run that hard the whole time
