Subject: Plantar Fasciitis.... HELP!
Hey everyone,
I am leading up to my third marathon on Sunday, May 15th.  This past week during one of my training runs I just had a little twinge of pain in my arch of my left foot and it went away fast and had no problems.  This morning was my last long training run before the marathon.  Around mile 4 or so, I started to have a dull ache in my arch when I was walking and then I started to feel it when I was running.  By the end, around mile 8, it was pretty painful just to walk but actually felt better to run.  I talked with the athletic trainer on site and she is thinking I am suffering from the beginning of plantar fasciitis.  She reccommended lots of icing, taking anti-inflammatories and stretching of my calf, shin and toes.  She said I would also be okay if I don't run this week but if I need to to take walks to deal with the stress taper brings.
I REALLY want to run next weekend but I also have an Ironman in September so I don't want to ruin that.  Does anyone have any other reccommendation or tips?  Does this sound about right?
This whole thing is really messing with my mind right now.  Kind words and encouragement would be great too.
Also do you think biking and swimming would be okay this week?

Thanks!!!!!!

Yuck, I had Plantar Fascitis 2 years ago and it is not fun. If possible, you should see a foot specialist to see if it is really that. If it is, they will most likely give you a specialized boot to  wear when you are sleeping that stretches the injured fascia and allow it to heal. The Dr also gave me a brace with padding to wear when running. It helped, but mine was so bad I just stopped running until it healed. Good luck!

I didn't get it too bad, but what fixed it for me was: (i) tennis ball self-massage; (ii) powerstep insoles. Good luck!

But are insoles a good idea the week of a race?

Hang in there. I found that my PF practically disappeared as soon as I was able to loosen up my calves. I had 2 or 3 knots in each, and my wife was happy to roll them out with a rolling pin. Hurt like crazy but I can now run pain free. Good luck!

Hello, so I'm super new here and also to running/swimming/biking in general.  So, as soon as I started running I developed plantar fasciitis and ITB syndrome , not fun.  I saw my doc and he along with my PT suggested rest, and arch support insoles until my arches adapted to running.  Honestly the arch supports helped a little, but I would still wake up in the morning very sore, I could literally feel how tight my plantar fascia was.  I started running AND sleeping with KT tape applied to my arches on the suggestion of a friend, a cross country runner.  Oh.  My.  Lord.  Seriously, if you've haven't heard of it, it's basically elastic sports tape.  I got a box for 12 bucks at Dicks sporting goods.  Give it a try.  In my case, swimming was about the only thing I could do without pain until I healed, it also helped out with my ITB pain.  Hope this helps, good luck with your recovery!

Sincerely

Yeah I developed PF in my left foot back in late February from running too much too soon in Vibrams, and have an IM in Sept!

I am using KT tape, since about a month ago, it helps relieve the tension/achiness in my plantar. Also I am taking 800 mg Motrin 3x day and not running at all. I am cycling and swimming a lot though.

I hope both of us recover though, good luck on the mary next week with PF, it might make it worse though. Since you caught it at the beginning, you might get lucky

Stretching the calves, lots of ice, try freezing a water bottle and rolling it under your foot. Good luck!

Get yourself a Strassburg sock and sleep in it every night. I have two, one for each foot, and my PF has reduced drastically.

See a doctor and also decide what's more important 3rd Mary or IMWI. If IM is more important be conservative and listen to your doctor. PF can linger for months.

I had it and went to an ART doc who fixed me up ahead of my ironman. I would highly recommend it.
