So now I debating on whether I will wear my wet suit in Bolder 70.3. Anyone know what temp Chattfield is now or boulder res? I got to say it felt good swimming open water without.

As of last Thursday, Boulder Res was 75 degrees.

That's probably what Chatfield is. It was colder until the sand bar... but on the other side it was much warmer.

Swam at Boulder Rez this am and it was plenty warm. I swam in a full suit and my friend swam in a sleeveless. She was happy to have no sleeves and decided to go that route for the Boulder 70.3. Just food for thought. Happy Swimming!

Anyone know the temp/conditions at Cherry Creek Rez?

Ya,  I swam Chatfield again last night. Didn't even bother with the suit. Worried about jumping in but, it was plenty warm too. I did a 1.2 mile course in the time I expected plus I was tired. Really debating on using the suit for the 70.3. Seems I'm just as fast with it as without.

I'd be anxious to know the temp there also.  Will be doing the Creek Streak next Sat, but haven't swam there...

Just saw on the Cherry Creek State Park website that the water temp as of 07/14/11 was 73 degrees. Smile

Open water swim season isn't over yet. We (Racing Underground) will be holding our annual 1.2 and 2.4 mile open water swim on September 3rd at the Boulder Reservoir. Start time is 6:30am, but we leave the start line open until 6:45 if you'd rather avoid the mass start and go in on your own.

I'm registered for the 2.4M swim at Boulder rez too! It should be fun!!

Does anyone know what open water swim venues are open past Sept. 5th? I'm training for IMAZ, which is in Nov, so if everything closes down in Sept. that would completely suck!!

My indoor pool, The Englewood Rec Center, is closing for a week, next week, for maintenance.

I will be heading to a local lake for that week. My triathlon- Crescent moon, is in a few weeks and I need this anyhow.

Thinking of either Chatfield or Cherry Creek. Chatfield is closer.

I understand the water is warm. Like 80*.

Should I wear a wetsuit?

My triathlon's website said that last year the water temp for the event was in the 60's. Wetsuits strongly reccomended. The website says that for this year too.

What you think...?

How much will the lake water cool off in a couple weeks?

Practice with the wetsuit?

I don't think the water for Crescent Moon was that cool last year, I was in it...more like low-mid seventies.

That said, do what you plan to do in the race, that way no surprises

Started my introduction to open water swimming, today. (at Chatfield)

Wow...A lot different than a swimming pool. Needed to get in the water and just float for a bit to acclimate. The wetsuit,That will also take some getting used to.

Need to do more work on this open water swimming. Not at all ready to race.

Was told 75* and fairly clear/clean water, today.

BUT, the water level is low. I can stand on the bottom in the roped off swim lap area.

The water temp at Cherry Creek was 72 and change last week, if that helps. I'm expecting it to be right around 70 for the Crescent Moon.

The Crescent moon is my goal.

Will be hitting the open water 3 more times over the next week. Hoping 4 open water swims will be enough to acclimate to it.

Not a lover of the open water swims. I think if this were all there was, I would pass on the tri thing. I like the pool. Clean warm safe.

Today's open water swim was pretty much a fail.

The wind was exciting the water and there were waves. Every so often a big one, big enough(a foot) to wash over me and get sucked in, nasty, and would pretty much bring me to a stop. I could go with the waves ok, but against them, well about 45* into them, wow, that didn't work as well. Would switch tactics and breast stroke and backstroke into the waves, and that was ok, but was slow and tiring.

Will try a couple more times.

mcgilmartin - 2011-08-31 3:29 PM Why don't you come out to Boulder with us on Saturday?

Next year. Not good or confident enough...yet. Yet.

Went to Chatfield this morning for my open water swim number 3.

Much less wind and a much calmer lake for it.

Much more pleasant to swim in a calm lake. The last 2 visits had the lake quite excited and very wavy. Was able to get a good swim in. 45 minutes, not touching the bottom(somewhere near a mile).

Sprint Triathlon...your mine!

I hope...respect the distance.

I wanted to reiterate ouradventure's question from earlier: does anyone know of any open-water swimming possibilities in late Sept. and beyond?  I'm really hoping the long swims don't have to be done in a pool for the remainder of the year.. ugh.

Just looked at COMSA's Chatfield OWS page, and voila! "... to October 1, 2011 - Please note updated closure date"

October 1 is a good start, for sure.

Anyone ever hear of any open-water swimming into November?
