It's not really clear what happened, but this part of the story worries me a bit:

"Race director Angelo Zomegnan said he had taken every possible security measure prior to the tragedy but that they would now be beefed up.

'Since the crash, we've gone to great lengths to ensure the security measures already in place are being checked and reinforced by specialist teams,' said Zomegnan."

I found this article with a little more info, it doesn't sound like anything malicious took place, but very unfortunate.  I think by "security measures" they really mean "safety measures."

I would guess that the "secuirty" measures is simply a poor translation.

A terrible day indeed, thoughts are with his family, friends and teammates.
