Total Time = 1h 15m
Overall Rank = 82/749
Age Group = M 45 - 49
Age Group Rank = 8/57
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:30. Had some oatmeal then loaded up my bike and headed to the race site. This was my first race last year and I did not do as well as I had hoped.
Event warmup:

Checked in, racked my bike, and set up my transition area. Stretched and talked to a few friends.
Swim
  • 11m 50s
  • 500 meters
  • 02m 22s / 100 meters
Comments:

Last year's swim went horrible for me so I have been waiting all year to redeem myself. I swam the course 4 times the previous weekend with and without a wetsuit. Not much variation in time so I decided to go without and hopfully save T1 time. I didn't get redemption but I did cut my time by 2 minutes from last year.
I felt like I really got beat up the whole loop. Never got clear for more than a moment before I was running up on someone or someone was going over me. Then I got off course at the turn when I sighted onto the wrong buoy thinking I was more outside than I actually was. I had to stop and turn around. Coming in was a little better.
What would you do differently?:

I have seen a lot of improvement in the pool over the last year. My time was nowhere near what I should be doing. I am going to just need to work on sighting and do a lot more open water swimming.
Transition 1
  • 01m 40s
Comments:

Made a much better effort in getting to my bike quickly. Legs were a little wobbly so getting into my shoes took a little more effort than I wanted.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. I was almost a full 2 minutes faster than last year.
Bike
  • 39m 34s
  • 15.3 miles
  • 23.20 mile/hr
Comments:

Had a little trouble getting clipped in but was off and up to speed quickly. I passed a lot people and was on my way to making up lost time on the swim. The was little to no wind so this was a fast leg. Only got passed twice during this leg. Actual distance was a bit longer too.
What would you do differently?:

Came out of my aerobars too much. Probably could have pushed harder. Still I was almost 3 minutes faster than last year.
Transition 2
  • 01m 6s
Comments:

Dismount was a little slow & I struggled getting one of my shoes on.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more with tired legs. I was over a minute fast than last year.
Run
  • 20m 48s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

Came out of T2 and was on my way. My legs felt heavy & I was sure I was not moving fast. I checked my pace a couple of hundred yards in and saw I was doing just over a 6 min/mile pace. That was shocking. I just continued to push myself throughout marking and passing as many people as possible. Picked up tha pace more for about the last half mile. Didn't get passed the entire run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Blew away my previous best time, was 4 minutes faster than last year, and was second best in my age group.
Post race
Warm down:

Watched some of the finishers, had breakfast tacos and beer.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Open water swimming. Other than that, I can't complain. I hit my overall goal time and was top 10 in my group and top 100 overall in a pretty competitive field.

Event comments:

This is one of the best races in Houston and always very well organized. I will be back again next year.
