Read a news story this AM that WTC is in the final stages of permitting for a full Ironman event in NYC.   2012 is possible, but a 2013 initial race is more likely.

EDIT - here's link: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-05-11/ironman-targets-wall-street-endurance-athletes-with-proposed-nyc-event.html

Looks like there is a CoJ thread on this....

Where would they ride 112mi in Manhattan? Can they close the roads for so many hrs?

....and yes, there are a few COJ threads here. i.e. a Parking lot full of BMW SUVs, each with a $20k bike on the rack - and average bike speeds of 16mph.

it's good to see the Tri demographic isn't in a recession as their income has gone up since last i heard.  now, according to this article, it's $161k!  that's a 7.3333% increase from the $150k i heard last year.

That's an unfortunate stereotype.

Oh wait, that describes most tri's anyway

But if you have ever done the NYC Olympic, he is being generous, 16mph average would be an improvement.

Yeah those numbers are given by WTC, which gets them from surveys they do of people doing their races.

Want to hear something funny? Here's how all things are relative. In that list, the only thing I envy is the 16mph! Cars are complete wastes of money, the bike can be good enough when you're this fat, and I'm slow right now. I drive a 2003 ford focus, have a $1k bike, and my avg speed is 12mph. But I'm 274 and I have had the bike for one month.

To the serious question, they could probably get a central park closure and make them do something like, 5-20 laps.

Heard about this a while ago in the rumor mill.

Other relevant rumors:

  • They were trying to get the run course to cross the GWB. These guys think big.
  • Costs for NYPD overtime etc. is said to be in the neighborhood of $4 milion, so you can expect the entry fee to be higher than other IM brand events.
  • Providence Equity (the owners of WTC) believe that they've increased the valuation of WTC to their target and are preparing to sell. Haven't heard of potential buyers or even a hint of a deal, but I've asked some sources on Wall St. who have contact with some of the principals to keep me informed about anything they hear. Anyone want to take a wild guess as to the asking price? Time to start digging in the couch for that loose change...

This makes sense. Triathletes are seriously Type-A people. As a group, they're among the last to be affected by a recession and the first to climb out of it.

I dont think a NYC ironman would be that great.

1) the nautica NYC triathlon is quite a mess if you are top-tier age group but not a pro.  It is just way too crowded and you never really get into that race sprint that you can get if you just go north an hour or two and do a local-run sprint or olympic triathlon.   If you get a bad wave start, forget it, you will spend more time trying to pass people that actually racing.  A complete nightmare.

2) Even with that said, I'm sure a NYC ironman would sell out very quickly.  I would venture to say the tri-state area has more triathlons per square mile than any other part of the country.  Seriously, if you live in the tri-state area, there are upwards of 25-35 triathlons throughout the year, and all are very well attended.

3) I would expect NYC ironman would contain a lot of loops and usually loops for anything over an olympic are an issue for some people.

An NYC IM would be awesome... beacause everything in NYC is awesome.  They could 100% pull this off.  Theyre going to host a Super Bowl aren't they?  That's the biggest one day sporting event in the world.  An IM is just a drop in the bucket compared to an SB.

I think it's silly to assume that the entire race would take place on Manhattan Island.

All 140.6 races by WTC are the same price. I think it's now $550? Or has it gone up to $600?

Interesting.....

NYC certainly has enough hotel rooms...not even a blip in the visitors for NYC for weekend...but do you think they'd up hotel rates for the race like LP or CdA?

The timing is unfortunate, because I just saw an article a couple of weeks ago that said that the NYPD was going to begin charging organizers more for overtime and street closures for things like road races and other festivals in an effort to close the budget gap.

Honestly, a full IM sounds ambitious, but a 70.3 would be really easy. I’ve said for years that an IM70.3 Brooklyn would be a blast—the swim and run could be at the Coney Island Boardwalk and finish at the Cyclone’s minor league baseball stadium and the bike could go out and back on the Belt Parkway, which is pretty flat.
