I'm going to be running a mock version of this triathlon on this Saturday, May 14 2011, and I bought a wetsuit but nothing else. I'm wondering if a thermal cap might also be advisable? I'm fearing this water... it's gonna be COLD!

I am planning on doing this race.  I dont know the water temp, but guessing its cold.  I found this link for Lake Winnipesaukee that says its 50.  Hoping King Pine is a little warmer than that.

Oh that's definitely good news! What's your game plan for the swim? I got a wetsuit and my mom just got shoes and gloves and a divers hat... I don't know why she did all this but whatever... I'm thinking of trying it on Saturday with just the wetsuit and seeing how it goes.

I will wear a full wetsuit with my trisuit underneath, but I dont use booties, gloves or neoprene hat.  It wont be that cold.  Sometimes I will wear 2 swim caps.  I dont know what they temp was, but I did an OWS at Glen Lake in Goffstown this morning and it was that that bad.  Guessing mid to upper 50's.  Air was actually colder than the water.

Gloves are usually not allowed for races.

Suggest you practice some open water swimming now...also come race time warm-up 5 minutes prior in water..so body doesn't get shocked when you hit water..there by increasing your heart rate unnecessarily

Awesome advice guys, thanks! One more thing: do you know if they're going to give us swim caps with our numbers on them or how that's going to work with the numbering?

Last year, as I recall, they numbered arms and legs but not caps. I bought a big Sharpie and numbered my cap just so I could try and find myself in any pictures taken. They had different colored caps for each age group. The run course through the woods was nice. One sharp turn on the bike course to watch out for though.

I just hopped in the water today with just a wetsuit, it was SO COLD! Honestly, I'm going to get a thermal cap... I'm fearing this swim so much.

I use those squishy silicone earplug wads too, as I find cold water in my ears gives me some vertigo. I push a ball of silicone flat in each ear, put on my neoprene cap to hold them in, put on my goggles, then layer a bright cap over the top. I put that top silicone cap on so it covers my forehead just to above my goggles. The gloves and booties saturate right through almost immediately, but seem to help. As the gloves have webbed fingers, I get way more catch, so I don't pay attention to the times. Kind of like using paddles, but less so.

Suggest you get ear plugs and tough it through...the swim is not that long you will survive...Im sure of it.

Water is 57 now and they have officially cut the swim to 250 yards.

My mistake.  I see its now 1/4 mile, not 250 yards.  Still short though.

I had a pretty good race, especially for the first of the season.  Came in 2nd in my AG.  Water was cold, but not too bad.  I think my feet were colder on the bike.  They were a little numb which made it hard to get my running shoes on in T2 and hard for the first mile.   This was also my first race using a Tri Bike and it seemed to help.  I wrote a short race report under Races...

29th! Not bad for a first tri... probably would've been faster if my t1 didn't suck (couldn't get off the wetsuit). Most importantly though, I had a fantastic time!

I just saw this thread for the first time. I did the King Pine and it was a real challange. As a rookie triathlete  63 yrs old and 230 lbs. I knew it would be daunting but I completely screwed up the swim. Due to cold water, thrashing at the start my HR went up immediately and I lost my composure. Felt like the wetsuit was compressing my chest and couldn't catch my breath. I wound up back stroking almost the whole distance so I could breath and had to ask for help twice. Completely exhausted when I got out of the water. Then I was freezing on the bike and lucky if I managed 12 mph. Almost quit about 1/2 mile into run, but after a mile got kind of a second wind and slow jogged to the finish. By the time I got there they had even stopped recording times. It must have been over 2hrs and 15 minutes. On Cool Runnings I was the last recorded finisher. But I finished. Lesson learned on the swim. So now I'm doing the Vermont Sun Sprint on 6/26 and the Black Fly on 7/10. Onward and upward.
