I've seen a lot of sharks scuba diving and saw a GW when surfing once, caught the next wave in pretty quickly!!!

Last year we went on holiday to an island on the Great Barrier Reef (Heron Island) and saw reef sharks all the time, on the last day I took my kids and their friends for a snorkel in the lagoon and 8 fairly large reef sharks swam beneath us - it was a bit weird seeing your kids hovering above a bunch of sharks but quite magical too.

Never seen a shark in the wild but then I have very little OWS experience, lol. I'm sort of hoping I never do as the ones around here don't seem too friendly - but then that could be the minority making the majority look bad.

I've never seen one, but we did vacation in Cape Cod last year.  The day after we left, there were reportings and arial video of groups of Great Whites for 3-4 days straight hanging right in the same area we were swimming in.  It was all over the news for days.  Yup, we are going back again this summer, but won't be swimming out too far!

Oh they're out there.  Mainly bulls.  Scare me silly.  I just figure we have an agreement - they stick to their side of the reef and i stick to mine.  Wish that cudda would go over with the sharks though.  I hate coming across that guy every lap.  Rays don't bother me anymore but I do stay away from the tails of the stings.

I saw 5 on monday... here was the last one...

?http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3452/5784160086_241641e136_z.jpg

I actually love and am fascinated by sharks... and have a very healthy fear of them... and support conservation of them (mainly against the process of commercial finning).  This was the first shark I have ever killed, though I have caught and released (alive and well) dozens.  PS - fresh Mako steaks are AMAZING!!!!

Here's me doing a little CPR (catch, photo, release) with a few non-edible guys:

I like to think this guy looks scared of me...

This guy was not scared of me but was generally unhappy about our date...

Here he is for a closeup (I thought this would help you go faster in your next OWS)...

I saw some leopards and epaulettes this last weekend. Itty bitty guys. I am sure there was a larger shark watching me at one point--could sense but not see it.

17 years ago I was surfing just north of San Francisco and bit it pretty hard into a rock.  My hand was bleeding a little, but I just kept surfing.  about 10 minutes later me and my buddy were waiting for another set to come in and we saw this HUGE shark swim right under us.  It was the scariest thing I've ever seen and we both paddled like crazy to get to shore.  I seriously don't think Michael Phelps could have beat my time to the shore.

I used to see them all the time since I worked as a lifeguard and surfed in 'the shark attack capital of the world' in Florida.  I had to doctor up a couple when I worked there also. None of the bites were ever really bad, the worst maybe need stitches but that was about it.

Yeh, leopard sharks are great swimmers, but I always catch them during the run

Seen plenty during of sharks growing up  surfing/swimming/diving here in Florida. All shapes, sizes and species. They've never been a problem for me, nor have I ever bothered them.

<Start Rant>

What worries me are cars while I'm biking or running.  Typical driver here has cigarette in one hand, cell phone in the other - biker/runner right in their sites. Of course, with all the stupid Sh*it they have hanging from their mirror or stuck to their windshield, it's no wonder they can't see me.

<End Rant>

Sharks are NOT the problem for triathletes in Florida.

I've caught a few dozen anywhere from right off the beach to 30+ miles out. The beachfront ones were usually in about 10-15ft of water, just past the 3rd bar, because that's where I'm comfortable dropping the kayak anchor. Over 30 years of saltwater fishing, I have only killed four, and they all came home for dinner.

We let the kids play inside the 2nd bar, knowing sharks are there. I do like to keep them close to other groups of people. And if I see groups of stingrays or huge rafts of bait fish hanging out near shore, then I try to keep the kids away from that action. Too confusing for a hungry blacktip. Also if there is gin-clear water at the beach but a color change close in, we stay away from the color change, as that's a great place to feed.

The "realization" that we are in THEIR environment can hit hard. Even standing on a 36-foot boat can feel pretty small when a bunch of big ones start swimming around you. The first one my wife saw from a kayak sent her paddling to shore. She said, "SEE YA!" and left me out there w/the shark, the baby and another kid in my yak. I have had that "maybe this ain't so smart" feeling once when a 4' spinner was doing flips on the end of my line, but he cut it w/his fin as I pretty much knew he would.

It was either "Bull Run" or "Blue Chromis".  My log books don't specify (stooopid me) Not sure of the exact spot, but it was on a "Blackbeards" dive trip.

btw, you live in a beautiful corner of the world.

What kind did you see at North Myrtle Beach ? Several decades ago world's largest Tiger shark caught off a pier at Cherry Grove in North Myrtle. Weighed in @ 1780 lbs. the next day after losing an estimated 10% of body weight, which puts it weighing over a ton when it was hooked. Interesting read here: http://www.scgofish.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?1613-Maxwell-s-Wor...

Can you imagine swimming and seeing this ? Ouch.
