Water is slowly warming up! Bennington Lake was 55 degrees on Tuesday when I went for my first swim of the season. I was in for about 40 minutes and felt pretty comfortable. Getting my face in the water was a little difficult initially but once you get used to it the water is not bad at all. You definitely don't want to stop moving though as the water is a lot colder below the surface and my feet definitely felt the effects of that.

Good luck to everyone with training. Two weeks to go!

I haven't been down there yet, but I mapped it with elevation on www.mapmyride.com. Take a look at the linked map. http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/35414300/?open_ive_done=1

Looks like there's an 800 ft gain between mile 1 - 12 , then you turn around.

Good luck this weekend.

Does anyone know what the water temperature is?

Its a gradual uphill ride all the way to the turnaround point. Nothing to steep except for a short uphill out of transition. You will probably be thinking you are having a really bad day and going super slow on the way out, only to turn around and fly all the way back in to T2.

The lake is 58 degrees right now. It cooled down a bit because they let some more water in over the weekend and we have had a fair amount of rain the last few days. Its not to bad though! I have been wearing a neoprene cap the last three times I have swam and have actually started to get a little hot at times. It's definitely a wake up call the first hundred yards or so when you initially put your face in the water though.

New to this sport.  I just started training midway through the sprint distance, and plan are starting the olympic training in a few.  Is the onion man a good first tri?  I'm in Spokane, and there are not a ton of tri's in our area.

Onion Man is a good race! Fill's up quickly in Jan/Feb, if it is warm in the spring, a Wet suit may not be required. Watch the bike, it is mostly uphill going out, but the return is a scream!

Good info.  I am going to be starting my 16 week OLY training next month.  Then I'm going into a HIM plan.  I think I'll do Onion man for my first tri, with my target race of Troika HIM for next year.  If I'm training HIM distance, will I be good for Onion man as my first Tri?  Any thoughts are helpfull.  Thank You.

It's a well run small tri. Hence yes it would be a good one. You might also look at Chelanman, it's a great race for HIM/OlY distances too, extremely well run. Haven't done Trioka or CDA races yet, but I've heard they are well run.

Thanks jsm.  It's a long way off, but it will be here before I know it.  I will make this my first event, with my target race being Troika for next Aug.  I'll post on this thread how Onion man fared for me.

I did Onion Man as my first Olympic and loved it! It's a great town and a fun course. I love the out and back on the bike and the run so you get to see where everyone is at. The water will be chilly though so plan for a wetsuit!

As far as racing Troika in August I probably would consider doing a different race for your first HIM. I raced it this summer and it was pretty poorly run. They mismeasured the swim and bike course. .3 miles extra swimming and 4 miles of biking extra. It is almost always a super hot day which makes that run in the middle of the day really tough. I would look at Chelanman, Pacific Crest, Lake Stevens 70.3, or Rev3 Portland. I have heard really good things about all of these venues! Good luck on the journey to your first HIM, they are definitely my favorite distance.

I am running the Windermere marathon as my 1.a race next year.  It is one week away from the onion man.  I think I'm going to have to sign up for a tri further in June as my first.  Onion man is just too close to windermere.

Thanx for all the info on the tri.

Race director usually opens the registration after the 1st of the year. It sells out every year, by about mid March so don't wait.
