Pre-race routine:

Alarm didn't go off at 4:30, but woke up at 5 thankfully. Had a banana, oatmeal, toast with peanut butter, and some gatorade. Left home at 5:30, got to the park and picked out a good transition spot. Got marked (my left arm was incorrectly labeled...), chipped, and set up transition.
Event warmup:

Ran about 1 mile, light stretching, tried to stay warm. Nothing to much, just taking the atmosphere in.
Swim

Comments:

STRUGGLED the first 200. This was my first OWS, didn't help that it was freezing. I had a tough time getting into a rhythm, started hyperventilating, and had to go to backstroke to recoup for about 10 seconds. After, it was all good and I started to get into a rhythm. I had the 18th fastest swim, so I guess I can't complain too much. I was pretty disoriented when I got out of the water, due to cold inner ear.
What would you do differently?:

Focus on breathing, relax, but really it was my first OWS, so it can only get better.
Transition 1
  • 04m 41s
Comments:

Due to the cold weather, I wore sleeves, gloves, and wool socks for the ride. Took some extra time to get everything on and somewhat dried off. I just didn't want to freeze on the ride. I have been practicing mounting with shoes clipped in, but thought it was too soon today.
What would you do differently?:

Practice having shoes clipped in already,
Bike

Comments:

Overall, I think the bike leg went slightly better than I expected. It would have been really good, but my shifters were not working for the first lap, so I had to take the hills in the same gear. It was tough, but they eventually started working. Looks like I'm going to have to get them replaced. Still, passed several people throughout, and only got passed by Cervelo's and Scott's
What would you do differently?:

Just ride more outside, maybe some hilly workouts. AND get bike fixed...
Transition 2
  • 01m 8s
Comments:

T2 was pretty easy, due to my transition spot, I was right near the exit.
What would you do differently?:

Feet on shoes at dismount.
Run
  • 22m 8s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

I didn't wear a watch for the race, so I just concentrated on picking people out and passing them. I felt pretty good after a mile, but before I felt like both of my calves were about to seize up. They didn't thankfully. Only got passed by one person, and unfortunately he was in my AG. I tried to keep pace, but he was flying. I almost caught him near the finish, but he had about 10 seconds on me. Had a sprint to the finish, and felt great.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe push a little harder after the hill.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk and talk

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The weather and lack of experience

Event comments:

This was my first outdoor tri, and I loved it, despite the frigid temperatures. It was organized, and everyone helped me get situated and comfortable. I would highly recommend this for a first timer, and will be looking to do this in the future.

Subject: RE: BikeSource Triathlon

nice race.  That water was freezing.  This wasn't my first OWS and I had some serious trouble with the water temp.

I had the same problem with my front derailleur (sp?).  I need to make some adjustments on it, I think I'm just going to take it in and have it tuned completely.  The wheels could probably stand to be trued.

Where did you find the race results?  I can only find the results for the duathlon and not the tri?
