Swim
Comments: Good swim for me. Actually was able to draft for about 25m or so before he dropped me. Glad to see continued improvement year over year in this department, even though my swim yardage lately has not been very high. 2009 time- 11:07 2010 time- 11:02 2011 time- 10:23 What would you do differently?: Use tinted goggles as I was unable to see anything the last 50m coming back to the shore. Transition 1
Comments: Good T1, 2nd in AG Bike
Comments: This is the area that I have seen the most improvement since I started doing tris 2 years ago. I have just recently started enjoying riding the bike, whereas last year I looked at it as a chore (not fun when you're training for an Ironman!). I've tried to ride consistently with ATCers who are faster than I am, holding on as long as I can before they drop me. I've also added a ton of intensity into my training. The bike ride was fairly uneventful. My HR was sky high coming out of the water and never dropped too much below about LT +10 on the ride. I felt great on the flats and downhills, but could definitely tell that I had not hit the hills that hard lately. Around mile 5 or so, Jay Meeks caught me and passed me like he was out for a Sunday ride! I was able to keep Jay within about 100 yds until the end of bike leg. The bike was longer this year than the last 2, but here are the avg speeds the last 3 years: 2009- 19.97 mph 2010- 21.28 mph 2011- 21.86 mph What would you do differently?: Nothing, felt great about the ride. Need to learn to do the flying dismount though. Transition 2
Comments: Decent T2, 7th AG. Lost a few seconds because I forgot my Garmin and had to turn around and get it. Run
Comments: Pretty good run for me, although I was hoping for around 20 minutes. I think I had forgotten the hills on this course...they're no joke! At one point before the turnaround I was extremely close to walking. I reminded myself how mad I would be looking back, so I was able to trudge up the hill and keep running. Glad to see improvement though: 2009- 21:53 2010- 21:02 2011- 20:50 What would you do differently?: Run more hills. Post race
Warm down: Didn't really do much of a warm-down. I really enjoyed cheering on all the other ATC racers...we had a lot of PRs and podiums today! It was also really incredible to watch a 90 year old man finish the race. He fell about 100 ft before the finish, splitting his forehead open (really scary to watch), but got up and finished the race! Unbelievable! I hear people all the time make excuses for poor health resulting from their diet and lack of exercise. It was very inspiring to see someone who has obviously taken care of himself and was completing something that most people in their prime are too afraid to. Glad I was at Tanner today if for no other reason than to see this! What limited your ability to perform faster: Fear of crushing too many dreams! :) Event comments: This was a great way to start the triathlon racing season. I was also very pleased to 3rd in my AG. Looking forward to what I'm sure will be a really fun year! Last updated: 2010-12-12 12:00 AM

This race seemed to take forever to get here. I stayed pretty consistent with training over the winter, so I was glad to finally be able to race again! I am not the type that trains simply because they enjoy training...I love to race. As funny as it sounds, I was preoccupied the entire week leading up to it...getting butterflies in my stomach every time I started thinking about it.
Race morning went smoothly, getting up at the normal ridiculous hour, driving to the park & getting set up. It's fun returning to John Tanner because this is where Bethany and I had our 1st triathlon 2 years ago. I like to be able to do races again to use a measuring stick of progress in the sport.
I really hate the feeling of going zero to all out on cold arms/legs, so I made sure to get a thorough warm up. I ran for about a mile and a half, getting a good sweat going. After running, I put my wetsuit on and swam a good 300-400 yds with some fast bursts to get my arms warm.
