Total Time = 2h 44m 49s
Overall Rank = 194/438
Age Group = 40-49
Age Group Rank = 27/61
Pre-race routine:

Loaded truck up the night before..Got up and departed around 4 a.m.Had a banana/7 grain English muffin with peanut butter and some Greek yogurt..Got to race site, checked in, picked up race packet, and proceeded to set stuff up in transition area..
Event warmup:

Nothing to much just talk to some friends and chilled out..Had one hammer gel about 20 minutes prior to swim start. Just keeped everything simple.
Swim
  • 38m 54s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 22s / 100 yards
Comments:

When I entered the water I totally lost my breath..This was a first for me..I could not get a stroke going for the first three to five minutes..After finally regrouping I was able to get going and put a decent stroke together..Started passing some people so that made me feel a little better. That was longest 1640 yards of my life according to my Garmin it was a lot longer..
What would you do differently?:

Buy a wetsuit..for sure...The swim training I lost due to my shoulder injury was a factor also..
Transition 1
  • 01m 17s
Comments:

Overall good T1 time for me. Helmet, sun glasses, grab the bike...gone.
Bike
  • 1h 12m 37s
  • 25 miles
  • 20.66 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt good on the bike, was able to get into shoes for the first leaving them on the bike..Maybe could have pushed myself a little harder, was able to make up some ground on the bike by passing others.Felt I did well on the climbs. One 20oz bottle with Heed for nutrition.
What would you do differently?:

Train more to maintain a higher speed average, but know where to save the legs for the run.
Transition 2
  • 01m 8s
Comments:

I went through the process quickly and got to running as fast as I could. Everything was setup perfectly.Just struggled with my left shoe getting it on, to much body glide on the tongue..lost a few seconds .also no socks on the run..
Run
  • 50m 54s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 08m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

I am very proud of the run. I am a new runner (started May 2010 from zero after knee surgery). The best 10k time I've put together..Was able to maintain good pace and then dig deep at the end for a push to the finish.Felt good to put this time together..
What would you do differently?:

Continue to train harder and get my run times down.
Post race
Warm down:

A little light stretching and talked to some friends of mine that came for support..

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Overall I felt I had a great race, I went in with a goal of being in the 2 30s however with the swim time I posted it made that goal hard to reach.I will learn from it and move forward.Still not bad even with a grade 2ac joint separation.

Event comments:

This was a great race I will do it again next year and might do the sprint they hold in August..

Great work out there Tim!  Def sounds like its time to get a wetsuit.  It should help your swim times quite a bit and also help you conserve some energy for the bike and run.

Very impressed with your run split.  That is terrific considering where you're coming from.

Keep up the great work man!  Its great to see you continuing to improve.

I think it's a great way to get started. The first race of the year always seems to be a bit of an adjustment to me.

Congrats on a great race! Yes, wetsuit would help, especially if your hips tend to sink. That is an outstanding bike split! Also a great run, especially only a year after knee surgery.
