So who else is going to join me at Over the Mountain Oly this weekend?

I spent the last week really working hard...on my tan and growing my waistline in the caribbean!  Not an A race for me but more of a "challenge" race.  Did too many flat races the past couple of years so I figured I would challenge myself on this one.

I planned on riding the course Sunday but after 8 hours in the car on Saturday, I had no desire to drive anywhere so I guess the course will be a *nice* surprise!   I am sure the "hills" will kick my but what goes up, must come down right?

I'll be there!  The last time I did this race (2008) I wrote in my training log "If I ever talk about doing this race again...someone slap me." lol!  But this year my goal is to "love the hills".  So I'll give it one more try!

It really is a nice course.  The swim and bike are both lovely.  They've changed the run course this year so hopefully it will be an improvement.  Although I'm sure it will still be hot.

If I remember correctly, there are two major climbs on the bike.  The first is around mile 16 as you climb into Kings Mtn State Park.  An the second, and harder, is around mile 23 at Sherrars Gap.  This is one where you think you are done and then you go around a corner and it's still going up!  Just know where the climbs are and pace yourself  and you'll do great!

Good luck!

I'm coming in from Arizona for this one.  My bike is somewhere in the Charlotte area already (I have shipped it to my in laws and it hasn't been delivered yet - fingers crossed that it makes it there okay and I successfully reassemble it on Friday).  Looking forward to going back to NC for a race.  Hope to see some BTers there!

Doesn't this race also have a brutal run?

I'll be there as well. I too spent the past four days working on my waistline in Florida

My sister did this last year and said the bike is hilly. I pre-drove it the other day and there are some of everything. Long gradual hills to some pretty steep ones. I didn't realize it till I was out there, but I have ridden Unity Church Rd in some training rides and those looked like some of the steeper hills on the course. From the times I've ridden out there before, they are not that bad. Seems like you'll get some pretty good downhills before hand to get some momentum going up.

My plan is to be conservative on the bike and hope to save some energy for the run. Good luck to everyone racing this weekend.

Has anyone heard anything on the water temperature?  I am trying to figure out what to pack, and don't want to bring things that are unnecessary.

Lake Norman Water temp (lake not too far away) has been in the 73-75 range this week.  Temps are really dipping at night this week here in Charlotte so it is highly likely this will be wetsuit legal.

Yeah, it's not brutal, it's just sh!tty. If they changed it, it can only be for the better.

Unless, of course, they run you through field of actual poo.

Run course is changed this year to an out an back and no more sidewalks.  Other than that, not much to go on.

I think I got this race mixed up with Bandits Challenge.  I think that is the race with the brutal run.

Setup will have the water temp posted tomorrow night by 9pm. I know it was wetsuit legal last year. I would bring the wetsuit just in case.

Not sure if you flew already or not but the water temp in Lake Norman this morning is 72 degrees.  I can almost guarantee this will be wetsuit legal.

Looks like we might be in for a warm morning depending on how quick it warms up.  89 is the forecasted high and 64 degrees at 8am.   75 degrees at 11am but it is showing a "RealFeel" temp of 87.

Thanks for the temperature information!  I'll keep checking the setup site for updates.  I am flying in overnight tonight and bringing the wetsuit.  Looking forward to the race, seeing family, and having some GOOD barbecue!

Oh joy!

Found this website with Moss Lake temp.  Definitely will be wetsuit legal:

68 was the temp they posted last night!  burr!  Although I am sure it will warm up to 70 tonight since it is supposed to be be mid 80's today.

Right around 70 would be perfect temp for me.  Hope to see ya'll at the race.  Says I am number 207.

PS - For there veterans of this race, what time do you guys plan to get to the swim finish for bike drop off?

My money's on Love2tri.

I trained at the Battleground for the Mitchell ride. Rode out there 2-3 times week. I wouldn't say the hills are brutal but I would call them rollers+.

Rollers?  My Garmin said that Mile 23 alone was a 200ft climb (after a 50ft climb mile 22).  Coming down I hit 42.4 MPH without pedaling!  The 5M stretch to the top at 23 was about 500 ft.

Total Climb of 1,600 ft.  Total Elevation gain was 170 ft.  That all being said, it was great scenery, good roads, and a great course.  The 2 different transition areas were kinda fun.

Great but challenging race for sure!  Nice to meet Wolfpack Mike out there....convinced him to do it next year ;-)

I have to check the garmin data tomorrow but I was at 47.something MPH on the last mile w/o pedalling.  Fastest I have ever been on a bike!  Nice reward for having to granny gear it (with a compact crank no less) up that last "hill".

Thanks for the vote of confidence.  Hope you didn't put too much money down! lol!

Actually, it was a great day for racing in Kings Mountain.  It is such a nice venue with great volunteer support and the new run course, while hillier, is a vast improvement over the old run course.

Hope everyone had a great day at the races!
