We keep getting false hope here. Saturday was 85 and awesome. Sunday was 55 and tons of rain, which has continued through this morning and is really trying to mess with my rides. This is the worst winter I've experienced since I moved here.

Yup, usually in my neck of the woods we're experiencing nice spring weather right about now (mid 70s and sunny). But yesterday on a supported ride I had to bust out my winter tights, two pairs of gloves and my ear warmers. I brought my balaclava but decided against it, and my face is paying the wind-chapped price.

The weatherman even said Saturday night it was going to be very "unwarm" in the next few days

We are setting records for the coldest, wettest spring ever.  The hourly forecast on WeatherChannel.com has become one of my most important training tools - think I'll go to the pool today.

It's nasty, nasty, nasty ....

Yesterday I did 3 hours on the trainer.

WTF??

Currently it is 6C with a 25 kph north wind.

Will summer EVER come this year?

Its cold in Southern California,  I tend not to ride when its below 65 but I'm going to have to make that exception to get some real miles.  It was worse last year; the weather wasn't as bad but it rained on the weekends almost religiously.

Woe is me

I know!!

But that cold rain, those high winds......I could not face three hours of that.

We had spring in Chicago a few weeks ago.  It was in the 60s/low 70s for a few days.  Then we had summer last week - 80s for a couple days.  Back to winter this past weekend for my first tri - 43 degrees, 20 mph winds with gusts up to 35, and raining.  They had to cancel the bike so I've only done an aquathlon now.

Wow, I just looked at historical data for my area for the last 5 years.  I knew it was bad this year, but not that bad.

From Apr 1 to May 15:

2007 - 3.1" rain
2008 - 3.1" rain
2009 - 3.0" rain
2010 - 4.2" rain
2011 - 6.1" rain

So I'm not crazy after all.Yell

As someone who grew up in New Orleans all I can do is chuckle when I see an example of 1"/week as an example of high rainfall amounts.  I've seen rainfall in May in NO well over 20" (over 30" in one May a while back if memory serves).

6" of rain is a decent amount for a day or two.  Those numbers in NO over six weeks would be drought-like. ;-)

LOL!  My boyfriend is from LaFayette and he says that the difference between summer and winter in South Louisiana is that in summer it rains every day and winter it rains all the time. Smile

Cool, windy, but drought like conditions here. I was on a run this morning and passed a guy on a riding lawn mower. Of course he made his trun just as I passwed him, so now we are bothe headed the same direction. I truely appreciated the dust cloud he was shooting at me, form under his lawn mower. This went until it was time for him to turn around again.

Yup, it's cold.  It's rainy.  It's been like this for 10 months now.  I'm still not complaining.  I'll take this over 100+ heat and humidity ANY day.

Besides, the sun warmed my back for a whole 10 minutes on my run yesterday - I think I soaked in more Vit D in my calves during those 10 minutes than I've had all winter.  Bonus!

I will volunteer to start the complaining for the PNW

Sick of the gray, rain and cold. We didn't have much of a summer last year, hopefully this year will be better.

I was in a tri yesterday. Swim was 67 degree water, 50 air temp. Winds from the NW, in the teens. Raining, rain since Friday, entire weekend till last night.

On the bike, I chose to wear shoe covers, took me about 2 min 20 sec to put them on (originally had shoes clipped in, then had to unclip off the side of the road out of T1 after I couldn't get my feet in my shoes because of the shoe covers). Return trip, I noticed I had no more feeling in my fingers. Couldn't feel the brake levers & gear shifters. Got done racing, instead of sweating, I was shivering and told my wife I needed to go to the car to run the heat. I'm really looking forward to warmer temps. And whaddya know, cold this week, but sunny, warm next week, but rainy. I've had maybe 2 or 3 rides this year with sun, warmth, AND no wind. I 2nd the motion of getting out of dodge.

It's a great week to hop on the trainer and catch up with this year's insanely difficult Giro d'Italia -- Stage 10 is tomorrow. You don't have to worry about distracted drivers in cars about to run you down, and you can just focus on effort/HR/watts/sweat production and get in a great workout.

Summer will come and it will be nice and long. And if it's not, it might be time to move to a better climate. I'll be right behind you. We choose to live where we do, right?

Actually climate change theory predicts more extreme weather, so any abnormal weather changes (colder/hotter than usual, more/less rainfall than usual, etc) is actually made worse by you idling your car.  While overall global temperatures are on the rise, the most devastating effects are more extreme storms, flooding, temperature extremes, droughts, etc.

The global climate is a pretty complicated system.

I didn’t think there were this many complainers so I will complain some more. Rode today, 50, 15 MPH with gusts up to 25 and…….rain. My first tri is in four weeks and I have yet to do an open swim. My first tri class is Thursday and I know the water is still in the 50s. This sucks

I'm not complaining.  I had the worlds best luck with the rain on Sat.  Got in a metric in the morning, and although it looked threatening a few times, it never rained till I was on my way home.  Then it poured like G*d's own fire hose, till I got home.  Then it cleared up enough that I got a motorcycle ride in, too.

PS- A bike ride before a bike ride makes for some interesting tender bits.

I just got in from riding home in the pouring rain.  It's bike week here in Boston, so I was trying to tough out the weather. I think I've suffered enough for this week, though. Any additional biking will be on the trainer. Wink

At least I don't have to water the garden!

We finally had our first dose of extended nice weather last week in Michigan, which didn't do me a whole lot of good sitting in my cube.  Then it got cold and rainy over the weekend like seemingly everywhere else though I was able to sneak in a 6 mile Saturday run when the rain was only at a drizzle.  I've gotten the bike outside twice all year so far thanks to all the lousy weekends.  Setting PRs on the trainer isn't doing it for me.  But boy does my lawn look nice compared to last summer.

I hear ya.  I had to turn the heat back on this morning and I'm a penny pincher so it took a REALLY cold house to get me to do that.  My group ride was cancelled on Saturday and I look forward to lots of quality time with Coach Troy this week.

Where on earth is spring?

i'll tell you where its summer, MIAMI....it was 87 degrees today...

Hey all my fellow Las Vegans are so quiet.  Yeah we have had some windy conditions, but temps bouncing from 85 to 96, already got my biker tan going strong.

Yep. It's been cooler than usual, but since usual is over 100 degrees, that's ok with me. Give us another month & the rides will be starting at 4:30am to avoid heat stroke. And I've come to the conclusion that is it always windy in Vegas. Doesn't bother me anymore.
