Subject: Advice on Pre-Kona HIM race...

I am looking to get one last HIM in prior to Kona as part of my preparation for the big day.  The HIM I had my eyes on is local and would fit my schedule well.  I wanted to see if that would be too close to the Kona race date of Oct 8th and if I should look to do one a little earlier in the summer to give me ample time to recover in case of injury?   There are not to many HIM's floating around to take part in so it is hard to pick and choose?  I would ony be a month out from Kona after the race and the last thing I want to do is be injured with not enough time to recover?  Anyone have any experiences with this?

Thanks

I'm not expert but I would think you'd be better served doing your long bikes and runs during this time frame. I would rather do another 100 mile bike than a HIM.

I'm curious to see what others say.

More than a handful of pros use Timberman as their warm up for Kona. I believe that's as close as I would go for the distance.

4 weeks out from IM should be a long training wekend. HIM gets you absolutely nothing and may set you back if you don't recover well.

I appreciate the feedback.  If I was to do the HIM in Sept it would be more of a mental "race day" prep more than anything.  I would probably just go throug hthe motions at an easy pace.  That is easier said than done though considering anytime you race you end up pushing yourself.

I really have to disagree that a half ironman gets you nothing in terms of training. Most people aren't able to duplicate race intensities on there and 4:30 of race intensity is better than and easy 5:30 ride in my opinion. It would depend on how you raced it, but if you can't recover in 4 weeks thats a bad sign. I would be willing to bet a lot of pros will be doing the Vegas, Kona double this year.
