I usually think the lap every right arm stroke.  Yep gets old saying 1,1,1,.....2,2,2,...   Or I'll also count laps and strokes as 1-1, 1-2,1-3.....2-1,2-2,2-3, etc.

All that said, when I started doing triathlons, I would be happy leaving the pool saying I swam # laps today.   But after a while, I learned I was just swimming 1-lap, # times.  In other words, it didn't give me much experience or training.  My time improved but not by much.  I got a lot better, a lot faster, swimming intervals.  If you want more endurance, just swim more intervals.  The longest sets I now swim training for IM is 350's.   Not too hard to count laps on those.

Sounds like me...   1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1; 2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2; 3-3-3-3-3-3-3

Typically only becomes an issue when I do 2000 yard TT swims.  But then I typically count to 40, then 20, then 20 again.

I use a whiteboard made for scuba diving, the one I've linked to has a regular graphite pencil, the one I have has a grease type pencil that is easier to erase which I prefer. One of the things I like about it is if i want to make notes it's easy to do. I got mine at Sports Chalet for $9.99.

I breathe to the left on odds, right on evens, reset after every 4 laps (200 yards)

ie:
400y set:
Lap 1: left breathing
Lap 2: right
Lap 3: L
4: R
(200y)
L1: L
L2: R

You get the idea. odd v even keeps me right, I mostly do sets that are 200y increments.

Today's 2000y swim:
200y, 400y, 800y, 400y, 200y.

I got one of these off ebay. really simple and effective plus I love gadgets and stuff like that.

 

I have one of these and it works well, you just have to remember to push the button when you turn. Though I remember to push the button better than I can count.

I saw a lady at my pool use a stack of clay poker chips for counting.  She placed the top one from the big stack over to a new stack for every 10 laps.  Seems like a cheap and effective way to do it.  I might invest in that finger thingy though.

Two things worked for me:

1)  Count lengths, not laps.  It's easier for me to remember when I always know it should be 'odd' going away and 'even' coming back.  If I can't remember if I'm on 8 or 9, well, this solves it.

2)  Breaking into sub-sections.  If I'm doing 1500 yards then I do three sets of 20 lengths.  For some reason three sets works best for me - I never forget if I'm in the first, middle, or last set.

 

That is EXACTLY what I do.  I also grab q-tips from the vanity in the gym's bathroom, and put them on a towel at the end of my lane.  Every time I finish a 20 length set I move one over....till they're all moved over.  Easy to count the q-tips.......

I started off with the SportCount lap timer and still managed to forget to hit the lap button at the end of each lap, I purchased the PoolMate watch recently and couldn't be happier. It's been dead on accurate over many sets with varying set lengths.

Not a must have.  But it'll keep you from going insane in the pool counting.

Have used the sportcount but after the poolmate, i really dont like pushing buttons every lap. Got lazy.

I don't count laps.  Prior to getting wet, I calculate how long the workout should take taking into account warmup - interval sets - rest period between sets.  Then look at the clock and see when I should be done.  When the time has expired, I do a 200 cool down and I'm done.  If I'm 50 yds under or over it is no big deal.

This method allows me to focus more on form and has actually made swimming more tolerable.

It takes me about 55 seconds to do 50m so if I'm doing a 500m set I know it will be 10 laps or just over 9 minutes.  I then start on the 00's on the wall clock and look up every lap or two.  Then i just have to remember that I'm done at 23:10 or whatever the 10 minute time is. (plus it helps me stay on pace)

I have been using the alphabet.  A friend of mine suggested this after she had tried a few other methods for keeping track.  

First lap is "a", then think of a word/words that begin with "a" until you get to "b".  It definitely is a lot easier for me to remember letters rather than numbers.  

The whole alphabet is 26 laps of 25 meters = 650 meters.  Could even help with your vocabulary.

I am not a gadget person, but i would like to try one of those finger counter things.

I just think about who won the NCAA basketball tournament when I was 1 for Lap 1 (Indiana 1981), then when I was 2 (UNC 1982), 3 (NCstate 1983) all the way up to 2010 (Duke). As a UK fan laps 11 and 12 always suck the most and laps 16 and 18 are the best. Stupid lap 17.

I've never found the "runner's high" but I have swimming and as a result I frequently loose count.  I just go back to the last point I remember and/or give myself "bonus" laps as a result

I've got the sportcount chrono and I love it. It will show you your fastest, slowest, and average lap times as well as your time for each lap. I used to just use it for counting, but then I got into trying different techniques or points of emphasis during the swim and seeing how it effects my time. For instance, I might start my first 10 laps focusing on reach, then the next 10 on streamlining, etc. It has really helped me to stay motivated because I can see what works and what doesn't after each swim.
