Swim
Comments: This was a RELAY and I only did the SWIM. My longest open water swim! So let's call it a PR. Unfortunately, it was a pretty weak performance. My main problem was that I could not see. It was a little foggy, and my goggles were dark and fogged over. The wave thinned out really fast, so I found myself basically alone and not knowing which way to go within about 5 min! (And I though, oh crap, these are all better swimmers than me! I'm way behind already!) I flipped over on my back to try and clear my goggles, but I instantly got a terrible case of vertigo. So I gave up and turned back over. Then I saw someone hanging on a lifeguard's surfboard, so I went over to do so too. Then I kept going. As soon as I would pass a buoy, I had no idea where the next one was. It caused A LOT of anxiety. As a result, my breathing and sighting were terrible. I was breathing every stroke. I was spending a lot of time with my head out of the water, which hurt b/c the wetsuit was digging into the back of my neck. I don't think it was until more than halfway, somewhere in the back stretch, that I actually start swimming my stroke and my rhythm. It didn't last, but I fought to keep my stroke. I have never been so happy as when I saw the second yellow turn buoy! And then I still had trouble sighting to the shore! This is also the first time I have felt weird (light headed) when I stood up after the swim, but it only lasted a couple seconds. What would you do differently?: 1) Get goggles that I can see out of. Prescription goggles? Antifog? 2) Train in open water with the wetsuit. 3) Get a wetsuit that fits better. Allow enough time to get wetsuit on. 4) Train longer consecutive distances. Transition 1
Comments: 8/41 I couldn't bend over in the wetsuit. Our biker and runner were waiting for me on the edge of the transition area. The runner took the chip off my ankle for me and put it on the biker! What would you do differently?: nada! Bike
Comments: My hubby was our biker. He predicted a time of 3 hrs 30 min, but came in at 2:58:08!! That's 17/41. Transition 2
Comments: 0:48, 22/41 Our poor runner was not prepared for the biker being done so quickly! At least she was at the rack! Run
Comments: 2:53:52, 39/41 Tricia knocked some 23 minutes off her previous half marathon time! Awesome!! She also was inspiring everyone else along the way! Post race
Warm down: Tricia (the runner) said, "I only had 1 bad mile!" and I said, "Me too!" :) Last updated: 2011-05-04 12:00 AM

Not much routine here! Got to the site with about an hour to go, but spent so much time in lines that I didn't really have enough time to put on my wetsuit. I started putting it on backwards. Then I didn't have time to warm up. I also wasn't able to eat much of my breakfast (banana and toast) but I did drink my tea on the drive.
All I had time to do was get wet. And it wasn't wet enough. The water was too cold on my face so I was breathing too hard for the first minute or so.
NOTE: Overall rank is our team rank. Age group rank is my swim rank.
