Pre-race routine:

The day before I met up with several BTers, Ann, Mary, Mike, Joe and his wife Michelle (and baby William). It was really nice meeting up with some people I met online. Definitely more fun to race with friends.

Ate a banana and yogurt a couple hours before the race. Skipped the peanut butter sandwich and forgot the pre-race GU. I wasn't hungry after snacking on peanut butter stuffed pretzels last night.
Event warmup:

Swam a little.
Swim
  • 37m 4s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 16s / 100 yards
Comments:

I expected a poor swim and got it. My sighting was terrible and my swim volume has been low. On the plus side, I wasn't tired at all coming out of the water :-).
What would you do differently?:

Swim more and find somewhere to do some OWS.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

don't know my transition split. The company running the race has mats at both ends, not sure why they don't have the split.
What would you do differently?:

remember my Halo sweat guard. Have salt pills in a bag so I can take them on the bike instead of T1.
Bike
  • 1h 18m 21s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 19.03 mile/hr
Comments:

On the way out I was hitting 25-27 mph and felt great. I can't ride that fast so I knew the way back would be brutal. It was.
What would you do differently?:

Not much you can do against a really stiff head wind except not give up.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Don't know. I thought I was efficient but the race company doesn't provide transition splits.
Run
  • 59m 22s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

Uneventful. I felt like I could have pushed harder but really didn't want to experience that kind of pain. I knew I missed my time goal coming off the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Remember my run visor.
Post race
Warm down:

Felt the best I've felt yet after a race. Obviously could have gone harder on the run.

why do you think your sighting was so poor? Given that I think I turned my .9 mile swim into a 1.1 mile swim, I'm probably the last person who should comment, but you know what they say about those who can't do.... Smile

Do you practice sighting in the pool, or aim for landmarks vs. buoys? (I find the latter hard...I mean, what're you going to do, tread water half-way across the lake while you find the perfect landmark to aim for??) I know that goggle color can make it much harder for me to spot the buoys against the sky and water - I wanted reflective yesterday bc knew it'd be pretty sunny, and tried amber reflective for the 1st time - probably the least worst color I've used, but it was still a challenge w/o my glasses. I have an OWS clinic & race coming up this weekend, in a lake where i know the direction of the sun & course make for a nasty combo, so I'm going to try plain clear goggles on the practice & see just how bad it is... even if the glare's bad, maybe being able to see better through a clear lens may ultimately be more helpful??

Great job out there, your swim looks pretty good to me! Wind on the bike coming back was tough to push through for sure.
