Is the Racine 70.3 Bike course safe for a training ride? I would like to ride the course before the race.

Yes, the course is safe to ride.  There is just one major road (Washington/Route 20), however that has a large shoulder on it and you are only on it for a mile or two.  I rode the course 3 times before last years race.

You can check out this thread as well and talk with people who are doing the race.  There will probably be a couple of weekends where people meet up and ride the course as a group as well.

Rode the course this past weekend. Safe? Yes,  but those were some of the worst roads ever! July it will be my first and last race in Racine...the ride was not enjoyable at all.

The Racine bike course is terrible! Passed on this race specifically due to the bike course.

I would have to agree with the bike course being HORRIBLE.  Like most of the roads in SE Wisconsin, a lot of the roads are concrete slabs which are usually beveled in relation to each other.  The gaps between the slabs and the bumps go right through you and slow you down.  It is hard to keep your momentum up on this course.  My back was a wreck at the end of the ride last year.

That being said.    Everyone has to ride the same course.

Last year I saw one person changing his tube mid-ride.

The worst part is the first 3 miles and the last three (out and back) it is like a bump and crack in the road every 10 feet. The guy fixing his flat though mid ride was about 20 miles into it.

I rode the course on Memorial Day and crashed after dropping a water bottle. I turned around to get the bottle I dropped and my front wheel got stuck in one of the cracks in the road and I went down. My hip and elbow were sore for two weeks after the fall. One good thing about the course is that it is mainly flat. There are a few rollers but nothing to challenging. There are a couple good stretches that are flat and fast.

I've done this race every year (except last year) since 2006. I have never noticed the poor condition of the roads. Maybe things have taken a turn for the worse in the past couple of years?

I'll be out there on race day... just signed up. Smile

The seams in the road are taint busters....pedal pedal wham, pedal pedal wham.

rode the course yesterday.  You guys were not kidding about the road condition.  On the way back, we were riding standing up for the last few miles.  I also had a lot of my splashing from my front-mounted hydration setup during the beginning of the ride.

Rode some of the course yesterday and did experience the patch gaps mentioned, but would say they're more of an annoyance.  I see them often on my everyday rides, so didn't think as much of them.  Brother thought the same.  What I did not see were serious potholes or things that could take a rider out or would most certainly cause an instant flat.  Wish I could have seen the whole thing, but another rider with us realized they weren't quite ready for the full 56.
