I just picked up a set of Reynolds Strikes for my Cervelo P2.  Does anyone have a good recommendation on a durable tire for these.  They are clinchers and I will probably go with a 700x23.  Also I am a larger athlete weighing 235 and 6"1".  Also I am going to use these in my triathlons this year which include 2 HIMs and an IM.

Thanks

Tom

Are these your race wheels or are you going to train on them?  For an everyday tire, I love the Continental GP4000s tires.  Decent tire and haven't had any issues with cuts or punctures in the 1000 miles that I have on them.

GP4000s' are good all round tires.  Relatively fast and relatively durable.  Good for training and racing.  I'd still suggest getting race tires for race day though...

Are you also going to train on them? I would suggest you do not.

Get Gatorskins to train on. You don't have to worry NEAR as much about getting flats with them.

X3 on the GP4000s.

Something you should know about Gatorskins.  You could run the GP4000s and get a flat and still ride an overall faster race than not flatting on the Gatorskins. They are that much slower.  I am not exagerating.

Learn to change a flat in 5 minutes and run fast tires. The Gatorskins are fine for training but they don't ride all that nice and you also don't get nearly as much practice changing flats. This is important. Seriously. Embrace flat tires in training.

The 4000s are as far as I would want to go towards the durability side of the equation.  Even for a slightly heavier long course athlete.

Just get new ones to race on and this will add some more flat protection.

I second this...just put on 2 new conti's myself.  But man are they ever a biotch to get on!  I'm glad I hardly ever flat with these tires.  It would take me like 20 mins to change one!

X3

First tire change was from the knobbies that came on my cross bike to some GP4000s. I was starting to wonder if I got a size too small - they were that much fun to get on.

Not quite 100 miles on them yet, but loving them so far.

X4 for the Conti 4000s.   I have put many a miles on mine in training and on race day and have never been disapointed.   Are there faster race day tires, yes...  But I prefer the additional puncture resistance and piece of mind vs. the minimal time saved with going with others.   I am competitive but not going to be on a podium soon, majority of us are not.   I want to enjoy my race and while flats are a part of life with ANY tire, I put preference in avoiding this idea as much as possible.  You could roll the dice even more by not carrying a spare kit with you and take that time savings into equation, but I am too superstitious to leave that behind as murphy's law would kick in the first time I did.

x5 for the GP4000s. Much more durable than Michelin Pro3's, which are a little softer and stickier but not as indestructible.

Can only continue the love for the GP4000S'. We've used them for a few seasons now with no flats and a full season out of the rear (6-8000 miles). Obviously the front lasts even longer than that.

I switched from 700x28 Bontrager Race Lites that came on my bike to 700x23 Michelin Pro Race 3's and I am really enjoying them. I figure I'll train on them as long as they'll let me and probably order a new set just before RAGBRAI if they start looking funky. Haven't had any flats yet (well, I guess I did have one flat a few rides in because the tube I used was several years old...) but I only have around 150-ish miles on them so far.

I also use conti gp4000s for training and racing.  I'm not convinced they are the fastest, but I got a very good deal on 4 tires I couldn't pass up.

But don't forget the latex tubes for racing.

Just a confirmation, or maybe a dumb question.  Everyone has written "GP4000s".  Do you mean the GP4000 tires or the GP4000S tires?  I don't really know the difference, I just know they both exist and they are two different tires.  I am assuming everyone is talking about the GP4000 tires, right?

"GP4000S"  The "S" on the end is part of the model type.  Different from the "GP4000".

I train on Conti 4000S and raced on them as well until this year.  Now I am racing on Vittoria Open Corsa Evo (clincher) tires with latex tubes.  Love the Continentals and thought it was a bunch of BS that different tire (lower rolling resistance) and latex tube would make a difference but now I am a believer. Have had good luck with the Continentals...cant go wrong there.

I bought Strikes a few months ago and put the GP4000S on them. I train on them and plan to race them as well. I figured if I was going to drop a grand on a set of wheels, I wanted some that were durable enough to ride more than three or four times a year - maybe I need to race more :-)

Anyway, no issues yet with the Conti's. They're grrrrrrrreat!

I train like its the big day, i had Michelin PRO3, then went to VREDESTEIN...the Vredesteins feel softer and have a nicer ride, but amazing road contact as well (last tri was in the rain). Cant go wrong with PRO3's either. Both wear quick, but i spare no expense.

I don't race this tire but I use it for my general purpose off-season training.  It's a great tire for wet conditions.
