I think I am going to Baton Rouge, LA to volunteer as a nurse for a week at the overwhelmed hospitals. I called the contact and they desperately need me. It is all contingent on whether or not my husband's company will give him a week off so he can watch the girls.

Does anybody live in Baton Rouge that could put me up for the week?  Does anybody have any Delta, American Airlines, or Continental frequent flyer miles you would be willing to donate to me?  The cost of a ticket is $700.  We have a free United ticket and some United miles, but they don't fly into Baton Rouge.

I went to the Red Cross HQ last night. The mass care guy told me it looks like we will be opening up shelters for some evacuees; he wants me to shadow one of their mass care people and put me to work once the shelters open. I took their Mass Care and Disaster Recovery training courses last year but have not had to use what I've learned as yet.

Red Cross needs your two hands.

I'm numb at this point, going through the motions, and I still feel like it is all a dream and I'll wake up at any time now. The hotel we are staying at will not let us stay any longer, they have some people who reserved the whole hotel for the weekend for some family reunion thing. I think we will be heading a little further north in an hour or so to stay with some family. Haven't heard from my boss yet, but I'm expecting to hear back from them soon, hopefully, not working =  no pay check. Think my job is going to set up in Shreveport, but I have to get in touch with them first. If I don't have a job anymore, I will be seeking new employment and a new home elsewhere. I have gotten some really nice offers from some incredibly nice people that I may just have to take them up on. We shall see. I'll probably be offline for a few days while we settle into a new town for the little while we will stay.

Heard on the news that this will be more costly than 9/11 and the tsunami.

I also talk to my friend yesterday who was adopted, but still had contact with her biological parents. They stayed behind (for reasons I did not ask about) and live in an area that was pretty badly hit, water to the roof situation. She is a wreck. Please pray and send her your thoughts.

Brandy,

How do you feel about Pennsylvania?

http://live.psu.edu/story/13296

Penn State is opening its doors to students who were enrolled this fall at colleges and universities that are now closed indefinitely due to flooding or long-term utilities shutdowns on the Gulf Coast. The University is prepared to quickly welcome them to appropriate Penn State campus locations so that these students do not fall behind in their studies this semester.

"We have been contacted by a number of students during the past two days who had been accepted at Penn State but instead choose to go to schools in the disaster area, such as Tulane," Spanier said. "We are letting those students know that we have room at some of our 24 locations to help them continue their education until such time as they can resume their studies at their home institutions."

"It is vital that great schools such as Tulane are given the support they need to re-open their doors," Spanier said.

Beyond students, the University's vast alumni base includes nearly 2,000 who are residents of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

For admissions information, call (814) 865-5471.

Wonder if they would take a lowly University of New Orleans student, we pay less in tuition but our accounting program is the best in the state.

I'll definitely keep them in mind. If my job doesn't work out, I'm not partial to any particular area, just somewhere to live my life.

Buildings across the street from the W hotel are on fire now. Everything is connected in New Orleans building to building, if they don't put this fire out it will spread to other buildings.

Think they'll let New Orleans burn to the ground?

Brandy, there's a Penn State satellite campus a few miles from us. It's within biking distance I think.

You'd be most welcomed to stay with us if you went there.

We live in the northwest part of Philadelphia. It's a great place.

I am just numb. I am isolated out here in California, the BTers I know there are the only people I really KNOW in New Orleans, but I have gone there for a week for work every year and I am just numb when I think about the locations I call "home" when I am there. Including the W, the Hilton, the Convention Center, the touristy restaurants where I host parties. Please, do let us know what we who are far away can do to help. When you get settled in your next city, let us know what sort of necessities you need.

Thanks for everybody's support and prayers. Brandy, I see NO on the news and I just cry for all of you. I work for a university -- we don't have a business program but if I can help get you information just tell me what you need.

For those wanting and able to help phsyically, the Red Cross is fast tracking its relief worker program and you can get shipped out on their dime afaik. It's a 3 week deployment. I know not all of us have that kind of time, but if you can, it's safer to go with an organization.

Our county emergency mgt service has put out the call for all able bodied medical workers, emts, first responders, infrastructure people (phones, IT, etc) to call them. Your local emergency mgt may be doing the same. Again -- a chance to ship out to be on the ground helping without worrying about how to pay to get there and without becoming part of the problem.

I am desperate to join one of these, I have it set up to take leave from my job, I want need to be on the ground helping people, helping clean up, DOING SOMETHING now that I know my parents are OK. But I don't know what my family needs yet as far as whether they're going to stay or come live with me for awhile, and until I know, I can't act. My first, my only priority is my family right now, as much as I hate to say it, I can't committ to the Red Cross for 3 weeks when my parents may need me in a week. I hate it. Inactivity is killing me. If they tell me they're OK and they're staying in that area, I am going thru our emergency management system.

If any of you is seriously thinking about going out to the affected area to help, please, please, please go with an established organization. They have the resources and organization to protect you and you will do more good than as an individual. And my deepest thanks to everyone -- no matter what you're doing: praying, donating, pitching in, it all makes a difference.

Have you thought about calling the local news stations and telling them that the hotel is throwing out paying evacuees so that they can put vacationers with homes in the rooms?

Renee has an EXCELLENT point. I understand people wanting a reunion but right now may not be the time. We are looking into offering housing for two people here. The fmaily had a vote on it and it passed unanimously (the babies don't vote). Detroit has offered to take people in so there will be transportation. We are going to talk to the Red Cross tonight and probably move forward. Ideally we would like a mom and child about the boys age.

Good to hear MI is on board, so's Minnesota.

As I said in another discussion, Minnesota had the first folks show up in Minneapolis yesterday. I own an executive recruiting business and also have a temp accounting and finance division. I have spoke with some of my competitors and as a group, we believe we can get people work and there are countless families willing to take folks in, not to mention charitable organizations and churches. Heck and our weather is still great! 80 degrees and sunny for at least another month and close to four months before the real snow starts to fly. The Coleman company is currently bringing on 60+ temp workers in their factory to meet the demands for generators in the gulf region, we have EXTREMELY low unemployment, and my only problem as a recruiter is finding qualified candidates to fill my client companies needs! SO there you have it folks, come on up, bring your bike, and your wetsuit if you intend on any open water training, and we are prepared to take care of you!

Good Luck,
Jay

No, I have to choose my battles right now. We are staying another night. Finally talked to someone at my company. I work for Hibernia National Bank (largest bank in Louisiana with a growing presence in TX), and on September 1st the deal for us to merge with Capital One was supposed to close, but they have pushed that back to September 7th, but they have Capital One taking our phone calls to create a database of people that are available for work. They are going to forward my number and email address to a manager. They said not my manager, but to a manager. They asked if I was available for work. I told them yes.

Sometimes these mergers are a pain, but it looks like the timing is perfect to open your options. I really wish you luck in this and I hope Capital One handles their new, displaced LA employees well.

We got good news today from a coworker who made it into the neighborhood. We lost a fair amountof siding on the house and most of the shingles off the garage. We didn't have any flooding. The only bad thing was a big tree fell across my company car. We are so lucky. Still don't know when we will go back. If order is restored and gas is available we would like to go Monday. Thank all you great people for the help and support you are offering.

Vent on!  Venting will help keep you sane.  Venting will help keep you from strangling one of your friends in their sleep. Vent vent vent!

I am still collecting names and info about people who have places to offer, and things to send you and others in your situation, when the time comes.

Exactly! Vent away...that's what we're here for...

[venting] I just want one, JUST ONE, uninterrupted shower. Please, Please, Please, just one. Being stuck in one little hotel room with your mom and her boyfriend for what is going on a week, was never my idea of a good time. Now don't get me wrong I love them, but normally I am never around them. normally, noone is around me. i'm not used to someone always wanting to talk to me.  Can't they just leave me alone for a while. And my mom's chain smoking is not helping things, my throat actually hurts from it. I feel utterly out of control. When I hear back from my company (within the next 48 hours the lady said) I will leave.  [/venting]
