Subject: Tire pressure pre-race check in one day before race

There is a mandatory bike check in today and the race is tomorrow. The temperature today is going to be 100+ degrees.

Should I deflate my tires?

Any other precaution/tips I should use for letting my bike sit in the blazing sun all day?

And it's windy, I'm concerned about my bike being blown off the rack in the wind...any tips for securing the bike to the rack?

Thanks

Read this QA article, basically 2 psi lower for every 10 temp rise from the air temp tire was inflated at.  Have a great and safe race!

I've gotten spontaneous flats when leaving my bike in the back of my Jeep out in the sun all day at work.  Took it happening a few times for me to make the connection between increased temps and flat tires.  That said, outside will be a little different, but no harm in letting a little air out if you can easily refill the next day.

meh.  I wouldn't worry about tire pressure.  My bike is in intense heat all the time and not one flat due to it.  But, you'd get all sorts of answers on both sides if it weren't for the fact it is a long weekend and slow on the forums this week.  Even some physics behind why it won't matter.

Can't help you much on the wind part.  Last race I did was suppose be be mandatory check in the day before as well and due to winds they canceled it.  I just don't know that there is a good solution.  Maybe try some bungee cords.  Won't help you from damage though if someone else's bike falls into yours.  Bikes all in all are generally tough though.  Try not to worry about it

Just deflate them each for a second or two. The next morning go fill 'em up.

I would let a bit of air out and plan on adding air in the morning.  My tires tend to deflate themselves overnight down to around 85 psi.  I prefer to ride at 115, so they always need to be topped off the morning of racing.

good luck racer

Read this... physics says not to worry about it... but people believe what they believe...

I'll quote the important part:

According to the ideal gas law P1/T1 = P2/T2.  So if you pump them up to 100psi at 70F when the temp rises to 100F the pressure will be 105psi.  Almost no difference.

It's never a bad idea to double check your tires the next morning. However the whole "popping tires" thing is an urban myth.

(Insert "but it happened to a friend of mine reply here")

I've used a plastic grocery bad to tie the seat to the rack to prevent it from blowing off.  Just be sure to remove the next morning.

Absolutely. See here. (Full disclosure: I'm a high school physics teacher.)
