Overall Rank = 32/600

Age Group Rank = 2/42
Event warmup:

I have been fighting a cold or virus the last 3 days, battling congestion, aches, and fatigue. I awoke this morning and didn't feel much better. I actually had thoughts of bagging the whole event. But, I got out of bed, jumped in the truck, and drove an hour to the race course.

I set up the transition area, met up with the other BT'rs in attendance, and headed over to the swim start.

Interestingly enough, the scheduled singer didn't show, so they asked for someone to volunteer to sing the National Anthem. Can you imagine? That is one of the hardest songs to sing. Some dude got up there and with no accompanyment, belted it out in spandex, a swim cap, and goggles. Awesome.
Swim
  • 09m
  • 528 yards
  • 01m 42s / 100 yards
Comments:

Nice short swim. I huffed it all the way around the course. I found someone to draft and stayed on their feet nearly the entire way. I got out and already felt winded.
Transition 1
  • 02m 3s
Comments:

Went sockless for the first time...it helped to speed up the transition time.
Bike
  • 34m 18s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 21.69 mile/hr
Comments:

Last year, I flatted coming out of T1. This year, I'm happy to report no incidents on the bike. I was winded the entire ride, though. I could really tell that my body was not feeling that well. I had absolutely no reserve left and no sustained power on the hills. I mashed the pedals as hard as I could. My left calf threatened to cramp up a few times and thankfully, never did.
Transition 2
  • 01m 18s
Comments:

My spot in transition was way at the back which made my T2 time higher due to the distance I had to run. The bike entry and run exit were up at the front, favoring folks who had better positions. The transition area was not set up to equalize your location.
Run
  • 23m 20s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

I found a chicka to pace, she was a faster runner and passed me coming right out of T2. I stayed on her feet for about half the course when I had to let her go. I finished about 30 seconds behind her. I owe her a debt of grattitude.

But, even with that, I still gave up a lot of time on the run. The difference between me and the guy in 2nd was 3:37 on the run.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, met up with the other BT'rs (Tom Plauche and his wife, Kristine, Tony Hammett (Tribesman), Haley Shaw (Tri-Comet), James Reeves (JamesReeves), and Chrispin Henry (Cheryiv).

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of energy. I really believe that if I were well, I could have gone faster on the bike and run.

Event comments:

Well, I was not expecting hardware today. When they posted the results, I was shocked to see that I placed. At the awards ceremony, they gave me the 2nd place trophy for my AG.

Well, since I placed, I was asked to submit to random drug testing. I tested positive! It was for an experimental substance called LCMF (or, in laymans terms, "La Cervesa Mas Fina", known on the street as Corona).

I took some pics of the BT'rs at the race, they're in my album...just follow the link: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/photos/photo-thumbnail...

Karl, I think there is something with the way they  posted the results. Its showing me at 3rd also.

Maybe they included overall male and females in the AG rankings?

Karl, you did great and I didn't know you were sick! Guess its going around, I had it bad last week. Now, go mow that lawn!

BTW, I thought you had a finish pic of me?

Congrats on your hardware!!!... It was a great race indeed. I was trying to locate Tony in hopes to meet the rest of the BTers. I must have been enjoying my free massage or cleaning up my transition area when you folks had the photo session.

Good race everyone.......
