So are you suggesting that we (Taxpayers) should be paying 20k/month for (estimate: thousands of people), for multiple months (since I believe as someone said, it takes months of treatment to have a chance to help someone quit.

Hmmmm.  Sounds like a bad deal to me.

Maybe you are correct. Maybe the better deal is to have them continue to steal, or end up on welfare, or jail, costs to the economy in terms of lost productivity, traffic accidents, etc.

Personally, I think if we invest in the people, then we are investing in the future. And that is true whether we are talking about addicts, children,  the poor, the sick, etc. - all groups of people who at the time they are getting services are contributing less to society then they getting from it, with no guarantee of a payback to society. And don't even get me started on the wasted money and resources on the elderly - those freeloaders aren't ever going to be contributing in a meaningful way to the economy.

Thanks for the response.  And yes, I do value your opinion and right to it.

My only issue, is when the society has a finite amount of money, I would rather see any money we can spare spent on the Children of this society.  They, I believe, are the future.  As for the elderly, hopefully they have contributed during their lives, and if they are like my parents and my in-laws, the continue to contribute by helping out the current generation of kids and grandkids.

Hope the elderly around you are as strong as those that I know.

But of course, that is just my opinion. Others may feel that paying for services they themselves do not use is a waste of money and amounts to socialism and the forced redistribution of wealth and resources.

Small sticking point:  The government providing these services IS socialism (to a degree) and IS the forced redistribution of wealth and resources.

Now, I *voluntarily* pay for services that I don't need or use.   I give to charities that provide a range of services.   In fact, I donate more to these charities than I pay in federal income taxes.

If someone came to me and said:  "I'm looking for money for my charity.   We take money and give it to drug-addicted people."     I would tell them to go fly a kite.   However, if they said: "We take money, and use it to feed and clothe the families of addicts.  We do our best to help the addicts, but our main focus is on their families, making sure they're provided for."  I would give them money.

If the government would get out of my pocket for its "social services,"  I would not only be able to provide better for my family (and my family's families eventually) but I would be able to provide more to society as well... in a LONG TERM and SUSTAINABLE way.

I didn't read all the posts, so if someone said something similar I apologize.   Two years ago, before I got the job I currently have.  I would have been against this type of thing, but for the last two years, I have been an apartment manager for a complex in a not so great area of town.  We had a very large ratio of people on Sec 8 Hud housing.  about 40% of our 68 units were from that program.  approx. 90% of every trouble call I got was about the people on the program.  Most of them were either dealing or using drugs.  I evicted someone fo not complying with the terms of his lease, and I was told that an eviction was an automatic loss of benefits.  He did not loose his benefits and moved on to the next apartment.  I don't want to be a judge on who deserves help, but having seen how the people who are getting help live, I think there should be a test of some kind for drugs...I could care less about pot...but Meth and Heroine.  My husband is on the waiting list for this same program.  There is an elderly woman that lives here on the waiting list as well.  I think that there are good people on the list and we need to weed out those that are going to cause problems in their communities.  I don't know how, but these people need help before they get blanket assistance like Section 8 or Welfare.  Good people run into bad times, I have met people in the last two years that were evil incarnate, and saw nothing wrong with how they lived...Oh...we no longer take sec 8, and the place is calm quiet and people really enjoy living here.  We still have a few people on the program...but they are quiet and respectful.

rant on...I also think Welfare should be limited to 2 years and you are given job placement assistance.  I also don't think additional money should be awarded for any child born after the 1st year on the program.  One woman here was a self professed bilker of the system.  She had 5 kids all while on welfare and Sec. 8.  and had no disabilities...I heard her say that she deserved "her" money!...HER! money?  ok..rant off
