Total Time = 1h 44m
Overall Rank = 180/306
Age Group = 40-49
Age Group Rank = 10/18
Pre-race routine:

Got there plenty early. I parked 3 miles away, so I biked to the start with backpack full of gear. I set up transition area, drank water, jogged a little bit.
Swim
  • 19m 31s
  • 600 yards
  • 03m 15s / 100 yards
Comments:

A long course. I was breathing every right stroke. A couple of times I tried to get a bilateral rhythm going but it just wasn't working for me.

At one point, I was next two a guy doing breast stroke. We were going the same speed!
Transition 1
  • 01m 42s
Comments:

I tried clipping my shoes in before hand, and jumping on bike on the fly. Unfortunately, I bungled it and shoe popped off of pedal, and I had to totall stop and get left shoe on and then try again. Oh well, nothing ventured nothing gained.
What would you do differently?:

Put shoes on before hopping on bike.
Bike
  • 53m 24s
  • 15.75 miles
  • 17.70 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt good on the bike leg. I passed more people than passed me.
Transition 2
  • 01m 39s
Comments:

I think I did OK in this transition. Heart was going a million miles an hour!
Run
  • 28m 31s
  • 3.3 miles
  • 08m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

Didn't feel strong, and not sure of my pace. I have a hard time judging if I am pushing too hard or not hard enough. My gut is that I should have picked up the pace more after the first mile.

For about a 1/4 mile towards the end, I was stuck behing a HUGE SUV with a Bush/cheney sticker. It was blowing exhaust right at me. Ugh. I yelled for him to pull over, but no go. It seemed fitting that the polluting Bush/Cheney vehicle would be in K-bunk.
What would you do differently?:

Ensure a Democrat wins for President?
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around looking for my husband and kids. Couldn't find them.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

me.

Event comments:

A fun race! 300+ entrants in a congested area. The race organizers did a great job.

Hey Maureen! Glad you had fun! It does sound like a good race. Hey, I'll do whatever I can to help you make sure that SUVs like that are not on the race course after 2008! This may be one of my 4 races next year, so I appreciate hearing your take on it. And how were the blueberry pancakes?

Nice job, it looks like you and I had similar outings.  (I still don't have rankings for mine yet, either.

I suspect Danskin's "1/2 mile" was more like 600 yards than 880 yards.  I had the same feeling about my swim yesterday: that it was the 'same distance as Danskin but felt much longer.'.  In fact, it took me 3 minutes longer to complete, too.  There's a hint!  On the other hand, I swear there was a strong current pulling me along at Danskin from the sheer numbers of people on the swim.  It had to help.

Good job getting into the arena again!

I like our methods for improving our runs.  :-)

Sounds like a good race. With all this training, next year you'll be faster and be able to PASS the SUV!

Great job in the race, Maureen, and nice report.  Great to pass people!

I am still strongly suspecting the Danskin swim time is off, or the distant is less than 800 m.  There is no way I could swim 800m in 14 min.  Failed to reproduce the result in the past few weeks, open water or in pool.  Even trying to draft behind OnTheRun when doing OW swim with him but still cannot beat that time.

Great job, Maureen! I was there, too, and was in the first timers wave although technically it was my second tri. I thought the swim was tough but it was my first ocean swim and I had a really hard time with the waves. I also thought the swim was long compared to the 1/2mi swim I did in my previous race.

Love the funny comment about the SUV and the bumper sticker!

I'll third the thoughts about Danskin distances. I know that Danksin's "5K" run was actually only 2.8 miles. But I would agree that the swim was probably shorter too, since I swam it a full 4 minutes faster than I ever have in training -- and I had a bad swim performance. So, sadly, it is probably not a good race for a PR benchmark. Your time on a 3.3 mile run looks fantastic to me!
