Subject: Where should I go camping?

I have family coming to visit this summer, and we'd like to go on a camping trip for a few days.  Where should we go?

This place should have cabins or something besides tent camping as not everyone is up for that (at least not the 6-month-old).

Ideally, it would also meet these other qualifications:

-in the mountains

-within a couple hours' drive from Denver

-have hiking trails of varying difficulty

-have a swimmable body of water

Any recommendations?

Thanks

A lot of the State Parks have cabins and Yurts, some even have advanced amenities.  Of course it depends on what types of activities youre looking for...State Forest, Sylvan Lake, Pearl Lake and Golden Gate Canyon are just a few favorite spots.  FYI most of the State Parks are not really 'swimmable bodies' as most people consider the snowmelt runoff too cold.  The urban parks (Chatfield and Cherry Creek) have swim beaches, but are subject to e.coli closures from dirty runoff...

With all due respect, is it really called camping if your staying in a cabin?  Wouldn't a cabin be a lot closer to a condo then a tent?  Growing up in MN I have stayed at "cabins" that are nicer than my house.  Then again, I have stayed at "condos" that weren't much nicer than my tent.  If your going to go the cabin route, why not just get a nice condo in Crested Butte or any of our mountain towns?

I'm with GoldenBob that I don't consider a cabin camping but whatever you want to do is what is important.  However, I don't know of any mountain swimable bodies of water.  That water is generally very very cold.  Although it looks like you can swim at Grand Lake.

I don't call staying in a cabin "camping" either.  Some in my group will stay in a cabin, but I am still hoping I will be staying in my tent.   Whatever our activity is called, I'm just looking for recommendations on where to do it.

Thanks for the helpful responses.  Now I know not to plan on doing any swimming.  We'll probably just do a lot of hiking and hanging out at the campsite.   or cabin.

Winding River Resort, in Grand Lake, has cabins. Lots of stuff to do there, or in town.

My in-laws park their 28ft trailer up there all Summer. My wife calls it camping too, but the trailer has  two 24inch televisions......not roughing it at all!!

Camping...cabining...whatever.  It's fun to get up to the mountains regardless of staying in a cabin, tent, or luxury RV!.

You might check out Estes Park.  There are some campgrounds that have cabins all well as spots for a tent.  If you are bringing kids there is a campground called Jellystone Park.  yea, sounds cheesy but when you are with kids it gets them up to the mountains and offers opportunities you won't find in the city.  They have cabins and campsites.  There are all kinds of cabins in Estes!  Also, there is lots to do at Estes...fishing, Stanley Hotel, Oskar Blues Brewery down the road in Lyons, and Rocky Mountain National Park has top notch scenery and hikes for all abilities.  I don't think you would be disappointed.  I've lived in the Denver area since I was 7 years old and I still get up to Estes Park usual once every year.  Out of town guests always seem to enjoy the area.

Have a great time!

If you want a place with cabins/tent sites and swimming, check out Horsetooth Reservoir near Ft Collins. We've camped there with a large group before - half in small cabins and half camping in tents on the beach. Water is warm, and even though it's close to town, it's still pretty. The state park rents the cabins.

Steamboat Lake, and your family can watch you race and you can have a great time in the mountains.
