Pre-race routine:

Event warmup:

Jumped in the 51 degree water and tried to get use to it. Swam very little
Swim
  • 31m 59s
  • 1500 yards
  • 02m 08s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim start wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I only hit one persons leg once and had mine hit a couple of times. They switched up the swim instead of being an out and back, we swam the sprint course twice. I had no issues spotting and stayed on course fairly well.
What would you do differently?:

Swim faster if I could :)
Transition 1
  • 02m 13s
Comments:

Coming out of the cold water was one of the strangest feelings I have ever had. Standing up I stepped on a big rock and almost fell. Then after almost falling I got dizzy and almost feel again. My kids got a good laugh about this. I finally started running up the steps and to my bike. Sock, shoes, glasses, helmet. Ready go!! Ok it didn't feel that smooth, it was more like socks?crap I can't feel my hands. Shoes oh crap my calves are cramping do fall, don't fall. glasses, helmet go. Stop get on bike ok now go
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 1h 15m
  • 24.4 miles
  • 19.52 mile/hr
Comments:

Hit the road and wow was I glad to be moving. I ended up passing a few people on the first loop. Then with the sprinters coming on to the course during our second loop, I passed a alot more. It was fun cheering them on as I passed, most of them saying thanks. At the start of the loop I had a scare, a guy on a bike blew a corner somehow and I almost t-boned him. Glad I didn't but wow was it close.
What would you do differently?:

If I could feel my feet go a little faster.
Transition 2
  • 00m 29s
Comments:

Yes 29 seconds I died when I seen this. I came in screwed up putting my bike in, hurry and switched shoes. Almost left the transition area, realized I had my helmet on. Ran back took it off then sprinted out. Whew!
What would you do differently?:

Not forget to take off helmet!!
Run
  • 58m
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 20s  min/mile
Comments:

Started running well maybe not running. iwas doing my best impression of a guy trying to walk in skinny pants. Yes I am sure it looked that bad. The run killed me, after the 1 1/2 miles I was finally able to feel my feet. Yes it took that long, my hamstrings stayed tight until about mile 3 by the turn around. When I turned around I looked at my watch and seen I needed to run a 20 5k to hit my goal. So I kicked it up and started running for all it was worth. Luckily there was a guy in front of me that helped with the motivation. I wanted to beat him so bad"he isn't my favorite person" that I just kept pushing no matter how bad my legs hated me. I ended up running a 22 minute 5k back. I don't know where it came from but I pulled out my best 5k time after all that.
What would you do differently?:

Try and figure out how to get legs going earlier in the run.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around talking to friends and family.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Cold water, tight hamstrings

Event comments:

I ended up at 2:47 which was good for 7 out of 11 in my age group and 32 out of 51. Not bad for a clydesdale in an ag group doing his first tri. Can't wait for my next one in August I am so hooked
