Subject: Trek 1500 with fat knobbie tires?

Good Day Ladies and Gents - the girlfriend has the bug and needs a bike to start training with, but she lives in an area where the roads are rough and a lot of it is rocky road (welcome to island life!).  There is a Trek 1500 for sale here which would be perfect, however the downside is it has racing tires.  I was thinking something like a Jamis Allegro 2 femme would be good for her area.

Would there be anyway to put thicker knobbie tires onto the trek 1500, where she could switch out for the racing wheels for race day or fast practices?

Here is the bike, and it's for $500:

Trek 1500

Thanks!

You can sometimes find cyclocross tires in 700x28. Vredestein used to make them. I doubt very much you'll get a 700x32 in that frame between the chain stays. Try www.biketiresdirect.com or ebay for them. They're rare, but they were once available. I had a pair of them, but gave them away to a friend who wanted to race cyclocross with her road bike to get into the sport.

so would something like this fit on the same wheels, just have to change the tire & tube?

Maybe the 28 would fit...but it could be close.  Although your selection sounds limited I'd recommend looking for a cyclocross bike.

just looking for something cheap and local, to bring in bikes add 45% tax, even if used.

Why not use normal road tires?

I doubt cross tires would fit with the brakes and the frame design. Cross bikes have different type of brakes to clear the tires.
