New user 159 | Subject: RE: Lifetime Fitness Tri...Who's Gettin' Nasty stevestenzel - 2011-07-02 7:31 AM Having signed up for the sprint this year, I think I'll be OK without a wetsuit. I like to think that it's around a half mile swim where I can gain from having a wetsuit in the swim while still struggling (and losing time) to get out of in T1. So this .4 mile swim is below my "benefit from a wetsuit" distance. But I've always worn my wetsuit for Olys or longer. Yeah, as Emily was saying, it's almost always a hot race! The Lifetime Oly was my first ever tri back in 2006, and it was 99 degrees when I finished. They shorted the bike to 22 miles (to which most people said "why bother'), and they shorted the 10K to a 5K (which is HUGE in that heat!). I did a long brick workout yesterday evening as the heat was starting to break, so I HOPE I'm ready for another hot Lifetime! How long does it take you to get out of your suit? It shouldn't take more than 5-10 seconds. At 5-10 seconds your "benefit from a wetsuit" distance is more like 100-200 yards. You're probably leaving 30+ seconds on the table not wearing the wetsuit if it's allowed. |

Veteran 576 Maple Grove | Subject: RE: Lifetime Fitness Tri...Who's Gettin' Nasty Rode the course this AM, VERY bumpy, especially along Minnehaha just east of Nokomis to the river. West river road was decent, but had a few very rough spots. Around Lake Harriet was also a little bumpy, but the rest of the course didn't seem too bad. Took an easy pace for the ride (particularly over the rough spots) and I took a wrong turn, but it took over 90 minutes (about 17.5mph pace). Hoping for a much better time Saturday. |

You're probably leaving 30+ seconds on the table not wearing the wetsuit if it's allowed. It probably takes me 10-20 seconds. I actually dislocated my thumb 2 years ago trying to get it off too fast, so now I try to be better (slower). And part of the issue is I'm pretty dizzy in T1 after the swim, so I usually need to quick sit down to get out of the legs of my wetsuit. We'll see what the water temp is on race day. I'll consider wearing it, but I don't know if it's necessary for me at that distance. |

Extreme Veteran 329 Maple Grove | Subject: RE: Lifetime Fitness Tri...Who's Gettin' Nasty Rode the Olympic course this AM. They've got more bumps than Hwy55 rumble strips in Buffalo. My eyeballs are still jarring. This course fits the roadies more than time trialers. No need to bring your disc wheel. Sharp turns galore. So you're good with sprintings, you'll do well. Relatively flats but got some hills to climb near the lakes. You can't get comfortable on aerobars for long before you hit the brakes for a turn or dodging big bumps and potholes. |

I'm going to have to disagree, besides the horrible road on the parkway, the coarse is particularly fast along both sides of the river. Staying in aero isn't that bad and if you have a disc definitely bring it. |

I'm going to have to disagree, besides the horrible road on the parkway, the coarse is particularly fast along both sides of the river. Staying in aero isn't that bad and if you have a disc definitely bring it. I've done the Oly twice, and I'm KINDA with boostedcvc, but I can see Me_Xman's points too. Maybe I'm more of "in the middle." There ARE stretches (like along the River) where you can really open up for a while. But there are a lot of little, quick turns too. I'd practice some cornering in the next few days to be ready for that! Example: I did some 3 minute intervals on the bike yesterday (5 x 3:00 hard/3:00 easy), and I planned them so I'd be going HARD at some technical turns. I worked on cornering fast but comfortably, and getting back up to speed quick. So like Me_Xman alluded, work on your sprinting! Hoping for a nice race day! Those showers can hold off a little! |

Extreme Veteran 329 Maple Grove | Subject: RE: Lifetime Fitness Tri...Who's Gettin' Nasty How were the ones in wetsuits started? All wetsuits in one wave? Were their time counted in the final? BikerGrrrl - 2011-07-01 3:02 PM Last year you could wear a wetsuit, but you had to identify yourself and you were taken out of the regular AG. It was over 78. I saw a lot of people who did choose to still wear them! (I was volunteering in T area) |

I didn't realize it was a time trial start. I'm guessing that makes the start much easier/less stressful. Does it change strategy at all? I imagine it's still just race your race first and foremost, pass the guy in front if you can, and try not to let the guy behind pass you. How far apart (seconds) are people spaced? I imagine if there are 3000 total participants, they need to start them every 5 seconds or so... |

I imagine if there are 3000 total participants, they need to start them every 5 seconds or so... It shouldn't change your strategy too much (swim YOUR pace). It does limit your field of swimmers to draft behind at the start, but during the course of the swim, you'll most likely find someone who is passing you very slowly. Tuck in behind and take advantage of the draft. Swimmers go out in 3 seconds intervals by race number (lowest to highest) regardless of whether you're in a wetsuit or not. I think they'll take note of your number at the start of the swim if you're wearing a wetsuit (only if it is above wetsuit 'legal' temp). |

I agree with this response, and just want to add that it tends to be a spread out mass of swimmers. mainly just swim your own pace and try to sight as well as you can. the first 1/4th is straight into the sun so you kind of just follow the crowd. and look for the buoys on the right side to gauge where you are. |

Expert 1544 Alexandria, MN | Subject: RE: Lifetime Fitness Tri...Who's Gettin' Nasty Besides wearing my wetsuit, and other than getting DQ'd, how else can I go about not having to really compete? This is going to simply be a disaster. We bought a house and moved 3 weeks ago, so my training has been almost nonexistent for the past 3 weeks. My logs are not up to date, but by leaving them blank they are close! Hey, look at the bright side, now I'll be fully qualified to answer all those threads that ask about being grossly under-prepared for race day! |

Veteran 576 Maple Grove | Subject: RE: Lifetime Fitness Tri...Who's Gettin' Nasty Water temps are up! Not surprisingly, after the heat last week, the main beach is up to 78.4, and the 50th is at 80.2. With sunny days in the mid-upper 80's thursday and friday, my guess is this will not be wetsuit-legal this year. |

Expert 1091 St. Paul, MN | Subject: RE: Lifetime Fitness Tri...Who's Gettin' Nasty TWO THINGS: - ONE: I swam Nokomis yesterday in just my Jammer. It was a bath!! Nice and warm! (With random HOT and COLD patches here-and-there.) The good news is that because we had a cooler spring, the algae isn't bad, and it's not AS green as it has been at this time in years past - I could actually see my hand in the water in front of me! - TWO: We should REALLY have a BT meet-up spot and time pre-race! We'll all be kicked out of transition at 6:45 (according to their site), and being it's a TT start, we'll probably have some time before we actually start. I'm not sure where's a good open area to meet... maybe near the BIKE OUT spot outside of transition? Should we meet up there at 7:15ish? Just a thought! |
