Subject: how does a relay work?

I am interested in doing this event as a relay.

http://somersault.ca/eventcanadian.htm

I am thinking this means 3 different people do the 3 seperate events,

and that they switch in the transition zone.

Is this right?  Am I missising anything?

Also what is the procedure for "taging" the next guy?

I know these may be silly questions, but if I don't ask I woun't know.

Thanks

Your assumptions are right, each person takes on either the S/B/R portion...   You exchange your timing chip in the transition area.

Just to hijack the thread...can a relay be a 2 man team?  1 doing 2 sports and one doing the third?

Yup.. you can do that too.

All the races I've done are chip timed and the hand off happens when the chip is moved from one relay member to the next.

Yup.  My first ever multisport event was a relay entry in a duathlon where I ran both run segments and my wife did the bike.  This fall, she's on a three-woman relay team for a tri as the swimmer, but the runner is now having some injury concerns and may have to drop out...if that happens, then my wife will do the swim and the run with the third woman still doing the bike as planned.  (And the original runner will likely be out her registration fee...which unfortunately will be the case at most tri's when you can't go because of injury.)

Doing the swim and the run would be amazing! It would be the perfect warmup.

Yes, you can have 2 or 3 people per relay. Most tri's will have a separate section or corral for the relay people to set up their bikes, etc. Depending on the rules at your particular event, they may require that the biker not remove their bike until they get the chip, or not let them hand off the chip until they have reracked the bike.

If there are enough relays, they may also have their own start wave. The swimmers will go, come out and run through transition to the relay exchange location, and hand the chip to the cyclist. The cyclist puts it on (Rather than stuffing it in a pocket), unracks and heads out for the bike. When they come back, they re rack, and hand the chip to the runner. Runner puts it on and runs the course.

Time is calculated just like everyone else, although presumably you will have much faster transition times. :D

So Fresh So Clean - 2011-06-07 12:38 PM Doing the swim and the run would be amazing! It would be the perfect warmup.

(Actually, one possibility if my wife's team's runner has to drop out would be that my wife switches from the swim to the run and I'd jump in as a replacement and do the swim for them...

...And then get back to the swim start and line up with my own wave and do the whole tri.  Relays always start in the first two waves at this particular race, but I don't know if my age group wave will be starting late enough for the timing to work out.  But people on this site have done far crazier things, so I might try it.  If I do, I guess I'll see if a half mile ocean swim works out well as a "warmup" or not...)
